I'd say republic is just a friendly name for communist.

Peoples Republic of China...

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics...

Democratic People's Republic of Korea...etc.

A Republic, which is what we are is a Representative Democracy.
That is what our Founding Fathers created.

Get a Dictionary, it helps if you're not....... educated.

I agree entirely with the premise of the thread - Progressives ARE Communists and they are not even aware of it!

The primary problem with Communism is that you eventually run out of other people's money!

How do we spot them ?

Step 1: Find everyone you disagree with.

How do we stop them?

Step 2: Accuse them of being communists.
Step 3: Get Glenn Beck to cry about it on TV.
Step 4: Pat yourself on the back.

The quote was regarding socialism, not Communism - and was said by Margaret Thatcher. If you are going to denounce Communism at least use a suitable quote

In the late 19th and early 20th Century, the American Republican party was a progressive party - does that make them Communists? No. Conservatism was once a progressive ideology. Still, it is hilarious the people criticising Communism in this thread and throughout ATS have no idea what the word even means.

Ermm no, not all republics are democratic. And the founders fathers were not hugely supportive of democracy - that is why the United States does not have a parliamentary system.

A republic is a state with no monarch, with the people - not all - have involvement on government affairs. The word 'republic' is derived from the Latin phrase res publica, which can be translated as "a public affair".

The Athenian city state republic was the closest system to a true democratic state.

Now, if members are starting to believe republicanism was inspired by the Communists then they need to explain how a Marxist theory pre-dates the birth of Marx (Classic republics, like Sparta, were founded in about 650 BC)

ziggystrange recommends a dictionary - I would like to add a history lesson into classical civilizations to that recommendation too

Oh, America, the communist Progressive party
is going to murder every God-loving America citizen with public healthcare and by promoting people working together. I love this country and hate what they have done to it
, so please buy my book and tune in to my television show to increase my ratings to learn how we can take back what God gave to us!

Fox News!

I thought we were talking about the American Progressives, not the various communist regimes around the globe. By the way... I can pull out death stats for non-left wing regimes, so the argument is pretty moot. Here is a thread I made a while ago that delved into the people behind the progressives:

Behind the Mask of the Progressives
