Look for pollution trails to find aliens!

Future astronomers in the hunt for alien life forms on planets would be better off looking for pollution trails, as they would indicate the presence of technology.

"Observed over interstellar distances, they would reveal to the observer the presence of a technology," according to a team of astronomers led by Jean Schneider of the Paris Observatory at Meudon, France

That's actually a great idea, I hadn't thought about looking for the leftovers of an intelligent race before. So if we find a planet riddled with pollution we'll know we at least have that in common with them. I guess it's similar to when I enter a neighborhood with garbage all over the streets, I know I probably don't want anything to do with the people that live there.
