Former evangelist: Religious right is 'trawling for assassins'

rawstory.com

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow is concerned that President Obama's trip abroad has served to bring out "the unhinged among the president's critics."

Not only have the Wall Street Journal and the hosts of Fox News been issuing their usual dark mutterings, but a new slogan has began appearing on bumper stickers, tshirts, and even teddy bears: "Pray for Obama: Psalm 109:8."

That psalm reads, “Let his days be few; and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow."

Maddow seemed mainly amused by the teddy bears, but when she turned for comment to f

Granted that Rachel Madow leans pretty far to the left but does this discount the story in its entirety.

I don't think it does. With even the "Obama is the Antichrist" stories here on ATS and the other hate filled Threads that occur everyday here; I wouldn't be surprised in the least that some uber Right wing religious cult might be plotting the demise of Obama; especially when combined with Biblical prophesy.

Religious Right Wing crazies have pr oven their capacity to kill as per Abortion doctors and nurses.

The intent of this thread is not to rip Christians, Christianity or any religion, but to explore the extremism that exists in some sectors of Christianity.

I think that pastors, preachers and other religious leaders have a serious duty to be careful what they say at the pulpit. Most people are in church for guidance, for some semblance of leadership, if you add in an emotionally charged sermon, you can easily stir a large group of people to action.

What worries me is that I've seen a lot of "fire and brimstone" types ranting at the pulpit over one topic or another like homosexuality or abortions. Some of these speakers are gifted enough to stir great passion in their congregation, a passion which, inadvertently, could cause violence.

People who commit violence for religious reasons generally think God wants them to do it.

From what I understand of this, it is a joke. It stems from the command to pray for those in leadership in the NT but they quote this OT passage as a joke. I could have sworn this is an old one that has been around for eons.

(Edit real quick due to feedback: Scroll down to read my next post before responding to this one. I never said it was a funny joke.)

Also, the article misquotes the passage. Psalm 109:8 only states, 'Let his days be few and let another take his office.' It's in reference to hoping he is a one-term president. However, the article adds in Psalm 109:9 (not part of the bumper sticker campaign) which states, 'Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.'

That is talking about death and would be horrible if included but that is not part of the slogan, which the article incorrectly claims.

Really, this is a joke that has been around for a while but the MSM is making it out be a death threat towards the president and that the Christian have gone off their rocker and are fringe hostiles 'trawling for assassins' to kill someone. It's propaganda, people.

Oh, and also the thing about Obama being the antichrist as an example of hate towards him is ridiculous. Just about every man in power and every U.S. president has been speculated on in the exact same way. There are even jokes in Christian circles that Barney the dinosaur has been accused of being the AC because that is how ridiculous it gets sometimes. Yet they're making Obama out to be some sort of targeted victim of hate or as if he is the only one thought of this way.

How UnChristian.

Just about as directly conflicting against Jesus's message as one can get.

But hey, don't let that get in your way or anything. I mean, completely ignoring the message of Christianity while using a somewhat menacing quote from the Bible - That sure says something. About the person using it.

Gah. I think that, instead of praying Psalm 109:8 (the article added verse nine by the way) people should remember this from 1 Timothy 2 and pray it instead:

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way

That aside, we need to remember that all this stuff going on around Obama (Antichrist and so on) isn't unique to him. Every president has dealt with the same stuff. It just seems that the MSM is choosing to focus on it due to their bias.

How UnChristian.

It is also unchristian for the article to add the verse about "killing him and leaving his children fatherless" when it is not included in the slogan for the bumper stickers and what not. That's lying, is it not?

Gee, I'm glad you think this is funny. I fail to see the humor.

But then again, I'm sure that you are right and everyone will get the "joke" and not read on to the next line which is the logical continuation, the "punch line", if you will, to the "joke". wink wink, nod nod.

I happened to see the show and was quite disturbed by the story.

But then again, I'm sure we will all be collectively outraged if something actually does happen to the President. Just like Bill-o denying that his "Tiller the baby killer" had nothing to do with his murder.

It's not a joke and it isn't funny!

Some Christian fundies are off their rocker and perhaps that is the reason for concern. As I mentioned the killing of abortion Drs and nurses.

Psalm 109
8 Let his days be few, And let another take his office. 9 Let his children be fatherless, And his wife a widow.

It seems the news article has it wrong. Maybe they should read the bible a bit more.
8 simply says “Let his days be few, and let another take his office.”

I take that to mean that people hope he is a one term president and that someone better will take his place. I don’t see anyone better around though as they are all politicians, most of whom are pretty worthless.

This article has it correct.

Don't you realize that this is the typcal lefty tactic of demonizing anyone that has the gall to disagree with their genius.

They love to find one bad apple and try to paint the whole group of people in this light. For instance:

1. one out of a thousand people at a protest is low class enough to bring a sign that paints Obama as Hitler. Then the lefties say look the whole tea party is a bunch of Nazi wannabe's.

2. a few abortion nuts gun down a doctor and how does the left interpret it? The say the whole pro-life and christiant movement are nothing but fundamentalist zealots who are equal to a bunch of self exploing terrorists.

Did I say it was funny? No I did not. I described it as a joke because that is what it is factually. I never said it was a funny joke. In my opinion, which you assumed incorrectly, it is in very poor taste. However, it is a joke nonetheless.

So, sorry. This is a propaganda piece. They did the same thing to people with 'Don't Tread on Me' bumper stickers and they were associated with terrorist ties. So now they're saying this new Christian sticker is 'trawling for assassins.'

Are you seeing the pattern yet?

I am 100% against anyone trying to assassinate Obama. That would be horrible, cruel, and create national unrest. Nothing funny about that at all. But I can still spot hysteria when I see it.

Also, I notice your signature states, 'Palin in 2012 !!! (thru 2014 1/2).' So I'm left to assume, by the train of logic this article applies, you wish for her to be killed? Of course not. So I do believe you are feigning outrage in this case due to the fact your signature makes a similar joke about someone's political days being short.

Brother, this whole thread is simply stupid. Go through our nations history and find all the accounts of "christians" killing presidents, lol. Really, is this all the "christian" haters out there have? Rachel Madow? I guess you will find what you want to find, but that wont be the truth...christians dont go around killiing people that dissagree with them...that is the hard facts...you will find a nut years ago who killed an abortion dr., but if thats all you have then you have a pretty flimsy case against a couple hundred million americans who claim christianity as their faith. Deal with your personal anger against the church in america and learn some tolerance for others beliefs. Tolerance isnt just for the left.

Many people are off their rockers what difference does it make if they are Christian or not.

Anyone can come to a board such as this or any other and see something that would make them go off the deep end and target Obama.

Facts are some people are nutty.

The one link you provide (atheism.about) could say the same thing about Muslims, Jews, neo-Nazis or what have you.

Ashley I totally agree with you. It would be terrible if something tragic happened to Obama. I don't agree with most of his goals, but he is still my President.

I think there are two goals in the left trying to say this is anything but a joke.

1. Get guns from those people they think are crazy gun nuts.
2. Paint evangleicals in a bad light because some evangelicals oppose gay marriage. I saw the interview on Rachel Maddow with the ex-evangelical and I am not sure but he appeared gay to me so I think that is his REAL issue with the evangelicals.

No, it is contextual.

No it is not. When you quote a verse in scripture you are quoting only the numbers given. If you do not give any other numbers it is not context with the quote you are making.

For instance when people quote John 3:16 no one ever points to John 3:17 unless it is mentioned. If the quote is Palms 109:8 it is only quoting 8 and not additionally 9. If that were the case you might as well quote all of Psalms 109.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the discord among democrats right now, the Independents breaking away and turning to Republicans, and the Republicans as a whole gaining ground by the mile.....

Obama tried going after conservatives as a whole by labeling them all as potential terrorists, nutjobs, etc. And it didn't seem to have too lasting of an impact.

I guess now it's back to divide and conquer, little by little.

As a side note -- this should prove interesting. With the new hate crime laws going into effect -- I'm sure they're eager to try it out..... I can see this becoming enough to arrest people for the bumper sticker as a direct threat to the safety of the President.

I see this also as just a "script" to make "right-wing" Christians look like a serious threat! Remember the Dept.of Homeland Security Report, they have patriots,home-schoolers,pro-lifers,Christians,etc ,..all lumped together as Extremists. So they have to come up with "news",real or fake,to keep it in the public's mind,to demonize people who don't go along with their agenda!

As a Christian,I have to say,on the one hand I am at an extreme disadvantage in a worldly sense, because I don't believe Jesus advocated violence and instead taught us to turn the other cheek!(Not to mention "Love your enemies" and do good to them!) Besides,we are to rejoice when persecuted for His name, and be willing to die for our beliefs.

The "news" is so outrageously engineered. Too bad so many think it's the truth!

Exactly what I though MSM trying to make something out of nothing.. again. The whole extreme right / left paradigm that MSM tries to convince the public will cause chaos seems to be of their own invention. S&F OP.
