I have seen the increase of advertisement for people to get the pneumonia vaccine and the other one that target teens.

But will the brain swelling can only be because contracting Mennigiococemia Mennigitis or you can get brain swelling and bleeding due to something else like side effects of tamiflu and aspirin.

I believe that map is just for the last two weeks.

It is interesting though, esp. the southern hemisphere still pretty heavy but not Africa.

Then, they are not a heavily vaccinated country and there was the Canadian study saying taking past flu vaccines doubles your chance of getting H1N1.

Hmmm!

The pneumonia vaccine (misleading name) only protects you from pneumococcus. There are many other organisms that can land in the lungs and cause pneumonia.

I would have to take closer look. Most drugs if taken at overdose levels (like Tylenol) can cause swelling but very few cause it at reccomended doses. But Im not sure about Tamiflu.

Wow, really? Getting a past flu vax doubles your chances? That is very interesting.
I have had TWO flu vaccinations in my life, first one was during Coastie basic training and the second was on the boat I was stationed on in the Pacific NW.
I refuse to get one now or anytime in the future.
Oh btw, they were giving out flu vax at the HEB pharmacy I went to yesterday. Not sure if it was for the seasonal, H1N1 or both though.

Ive never heard of acetaminophen causing swelling, except in the liver.
Anyone that dies from taking to much of that drug, dies due to liver failure.

That is just one study and the full study has not been released by the journal.

Your pharmacy only has the seasonal vac, H1N1 is supposed to start arriving next week.

If you think about it, getting the vaccine gives you a few months immunity where having the actual flu will give you lifetime immunity unless their is a very large shift in the DNA of the virus...such as we are seeing with the new one.

There was another H1N1 related death Saturday, an autopsy confirmed.
Two deaths in less than a week in a city this size (300k population) isnt a good ratio, unless it was just a fluke.
There is the fact that she had underlying conditions though, obesity and a heart condition.

CORPUS CHRISTI — Swine flu caused the death of a 45-year-old health care worker, the Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District announced Thursday. The woman, who worked at Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial, died Saturday of viral pneumonia, said local health authority Dr. William Burgin Jr. Officials received positive test results Thursday indicating the woman, who was admitted to a hospital on Sept. 24, had swine flu, or the H1N1 virus, he said. The woman had pre-existing conditions such as obesity and cardiac arrhythmia that may have played a part in the rapid escalation of the swine flu, Burgin said. “People who have swine flu who are obese have more trouble breathing,” because of pressure on their diaphragm, he said. Health officials sought tests because an autopsy on the woman suggested she may have had swine flu, Burgin said.

it sounds like brain swelling is not a rarity with the modern flu's
be it swine flu or bird flu, etc.

So some sort of guage or test of
ones fluid in the brain should be included in the treatment protocols
right now.

as for the future, since the current system of top notch health care providers are missing some of the symptoms....just what chance will we have when we actually get Obamas' universal health care ?

** when the staff at Clinics are liberal arts majors instead of medical professionals
** when the staff at hospitals are the mass trained, prepared for 3rd world assignment, para-doctors and para-nurses...
and then we cannot sue for maltreatment/malpractice because only para-legals are available to the general populace..................(As all the true specialists in the health & legal fields are available to only the elites of the Leadership Class; Fed-Treas-bankers & congress & the elite oligarchs of the socialist-fascist State)

Okay...

I have to say this thread is freaking me out a bit right now.

Because H1N1 is rampant by me and last Friday night I became unbearably ill, I did not go to the hospital because I honestly don't think there is much that can be done anyway but I was all week incredibly ill with a stiff neck, impossible migraines and I even posted a thread about it because the symptoms were like "no flu I ever have felt" given the swine flu hysteria I was happy to come up with many theories about swine flu.

I am now reading this...

and really feel like if I did catch H1N1 I obviously from description had Viral Meningitis as well or maybe just viral Meningitis

I'd be very interested in any info anyone has

And any thoughts as to why we would be seeing Viral meningitis right now or Bacterial...

In my life I have never met a person with Meningitis... even having a professional background in biology I never even thought about Meningitis this week for a second!

And via symptoms it only makes sense, extreme Neck pain, Migraines or what I thought was a Migraine... aside from Kidney stones I never felt such pain in my LIFE

I started reading on the net after this thread and said to myself OMG... had to be

On day 7 now and i'm good to go with just some Ibuprofen

But this is just too much, why is Meningitis going around... I never hear of it and I googled it and there are tons of articles about H1n1 being confused with Meningitis

You think you have the H1N1, and you have stiff neck and migraines you should go to the doctor, those "could be" symptoms worth looking at by a medical professional.

Even if you are feeling better now you should complain about that to your health care professional.

Fever, stomach problems and diarrhea are also or could be symptoms.

Be careful and take care of yourself.

Too late now.

If it was bacterial... I wouldn't be doing well and Viral is basically home treatment as I see from reading so, a week later I have no reason to spend the money.

H1N1 is rampant here, I just never gave a thought... kind of scary.

Incredible pain in head and stiffness... lol I was busy wondering that "this was no flu"

You sound like you have a bit of knowledge

I have to ask again, what are your personal thoughts on a spread of Meningitis right now?

He, he, my knowledge is more of doing research than anything else as I am against any vaccination personally.

Meningitis is something that can strike anybody, but somethings we may be helping ourselves with the way we over medicate to makes us more susceptible to it, This is just a personal opinion.

I am more scare of the side effects of medications than anything else.

I had the dengue fever when I was a teen and it attacks the nervous system also is not vaccination or really any treatment for it until now.

So the stiff neck and headaches was one of the main symptoms and back in my days it was not warnings against aspirin so that was the first thing you were given.

I had the flu here in the US but I can tell you that the dengue fever is worst.

I have to add stomach problems.... Check
Disorientation... Check
Mildly urm.... psychadelic Check

I dealt with it

lol

Chicken Soup, massive Garlic and Onions

95% reduction of carbohydrates

High doses of Ibuprofen

Massage with Heat

Body Heating slept with 4 blankets and 2 heaters for 2 nights...Sweat and Fever essentially

High doses of C and D and Ginko Biloba to bring circulation to my head, Glucosamine to further reduce swelling

Meditation, Pranayama and Tibetan Healing

Hot baths

Tons of Water.

Last few days even when head was still throbbing I started doing good long runs to purge and circulate

and i'm pretty good right now... not perfect but much, much better.

You know... this swine flu panic is dangerous, If meningitis is spreading around heavy, it's over shadowing and leading even a guy like me who was a Microbio and Pharmacology student to wrong conclusions....

Headlines the day before I was sick was about swine flu breaking out in major numbers, it's very misleading in regards to how I handled this, if it was Bacterial I could have died...

Who said anything about a Meningitis outbreak? We were just discussing a few of the things that would cause swelling of the brain and Meningitis was mentioned as one of those causes.
Unless I missed it somewhere, i dont believe that anyone mentioned anything about a current outbreak.

I forgot to mention this though, one of my sons good friends, hes stayed at our place quite a few times, missed around 8 days of school the latter part of last month and he "claims" that the Doctor confirmed that it was swine flu.
Not saying hes lying but if its true then it will be the first person that I've personally known that has been infected by this virus but I also understand that a lot of people dont go to the doctor everytime they have symptoms associated with any kind of flu, so you never know.

You really should have gone to the Dr. with those symptoms. You are lucky.

Still, you needed to be checked out and given instructions as to whether you may need to go to the ER.

My granddaughter complained of stiff neck and headache and nothing was found, or really even checked. Few day later that went away and she began complaining of chest discomfort and having to prop up with a couple of pillows to breath. Back to the dr and he thought it was anxiety. Next morn she was in the hospital ICU with cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. Well, she was 18 and recovered but went to her prom in a wheelchair.

Not to scare you, but their thinking was she had a mild viral meningitis that settled in her heart. I don't know how rare that is. Just want you not to be so darn tough. At least call and give them your symptoms and let them make the call as to what you should do.

Glad you recovered and are here to tell us about it.

I cant understand why so many people are panicked when there really isnt that much hype going on in the news.
Here is a story in another news site in Corpus, excuse the all CAPS but that is how it is written.

link

Emergency Rooms Face Overcrowding Due To H1N1 Concerns - HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOMS ACROSS SOUTH TEXAS ARE PACKED ! THE AVERAGE WAITING TIME TO BE SEEN BY A DOCTOR HAS REACHED 8-10 HOURS ! THAT'S BECAUSE SWINE FLU CASES HAVE REACHED EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS -- ACCORDING TO LOCAL HEALTH AUTHORITIES. BUT DR. JAIME FERGIE, DIRECTOR OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES FOR DRISCOLL CHILDRENS HOSPITAL, SAYS RATHER THAN GOING TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM, SWINE FLU PATIENTS SHOULD INSTEAD GO TO THEIR OWN DOCTOR OR PEDIATRICIAN OR FAMILY DOCTOR'S OFFICE. THEIR SYMPTOMS CAN BE TREATED THERE AS WELL.

8-10 hour wait time in the ER, that is totally ridiculous... and the story goes on to say that 99.9% of the patients have problems NOT related to H1N1.

www.sun-sentinel.com...

Health officials have known since the 1918 flu pandemic that pregnant women were more vulnerable. When infected, they suffer increased rates of abortion, premature births and complications at delivery, the CDC reports. Their babies have more complications, too. Fever during pregnancy doubles the risk of nervous system defects and is linked to seizures, brain swelling and cerebral palsy.

Experts said it's connected to the many changes that happen to the body of a pregnant woman. To avoid rejecting the fetus as a foreign object, the body shuts off part of immune system that kills invading organisms. That leaves the mother less able to fight off infections from viruses such as flu, parasites and diseases such as malaria.

Also, Theiler said, the heart and lungs must work much harder than normal to supply extra blood for the baby. An infection puts even more pressure on those systems.

CINCINNATI — A 26-year-old southeastern Indiana woman hospitalized with swine flu has died three weeks after her younger brother died of the disease.

Mindy McIntosh of Dillsboro, Ind., died Monday at University Hospital in Cincinnati.

Family friend Mike Dittmer says McIntosh had been improving before a blood clot in her lungs and a rapid change in blood pressure led to brain swelling.

Her 19-year-old brother Matthew McIntosh died July 5 from the virus at University Hospital. The siblings lived with their mother about 30 miles west of Cincinnati and were hospitalized after falling ill in late June.

Their mother has said neither of them traveled out of the country and she didn't know how they caught the virus.

I know I seen articles from the past that stated brain swelling that were from Brazil and also Japan.

Just a little update for those interested. Last week a man from Rockport died from H1N1, Rockport is in Nueces County and is about 30 miles E-N/E from Corpus Christi.
Apparently he started feeling sick on a Thursday and went to the hospital here in Corpus but after a 4 hour wait in the ER he went home.
Went back to the hospital Friday and died later that afternoon.

CORPUS CHRISTI - The man who died of swine flu last Friday has been identified as 58-year-old Irving Neal Range of Rockport. Health officials said Range got pneumonia as a result of the swine flu and died from the illness last Friday. Doctors said they don't believe Range had any pre-existing medical conditions. His mother, Opal Range said he went to the emergency room Thursday at Christus Spohn Memorial but after waiting four hours, he came home, but went back the next day. Opal said her son passed away later that afternoon. Irving was buried at sea earlier this week. Irving is the seventh person locally to die of swine flu. His death was the third swine flu death in just over a week. Dr. William Burgin with the City-County Health Department said the number of swine flu cases has doubled in just the past week. He also said schools are reporting more absences. The health department predicted there would be higher numbers of the flu this fall once classes started again.

Swine flu news is really low key here but this area has had 3 deaths in as many weeks.
