US ready for N Korea direct talks

The US says it would hold direct talks with North Korea to persuade it to return to stalled multilateral talks on ending its nuclear programme.

A spokesman for the US state department said that there had been no decision on when such talks might take place.

Philip Crowley insisted the move was not a policy shift and talks would take place within "the six-party process".

U.S. Accepts Offer From Tehran for Broad Talks

By Glenn Kessler

The United States has decided to ignore Iran's refusal to discuss its nuclear program and instead accept a vague Iranian plan for talks on security issues as the opening gambit to draw Tehran into real negotiation.

The effort to "test" Iran's intentions, announced on Friday, came after Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said his country is skeptical of the need for new sanctions on Iran, giving the Americans little choice but to treat seriously Iran's latest offer.

Colud be nothing. Obama likes to sit around and chat.

Could be everything.

Is Part II being released? The Empire Strikes Back.

Showdown between the West in retaliation for blowing up the WTC Death Star. The Muslim Alliance have been itchin' for a fight.

Israel knocks out Iranian facilities, Saudis hit Syria, India kicks Pakistan in the nuts, Russia deals with it's problematic souther neighbours.

EU frets, China stays cool, UN shows how useless it is. US, Britain, France wait to see if they start throwing nukes, and then picks the moment to settle things.

Iran and Korea are sweating. Which may mean they know the games afoot.

But more likely just more talk and no action.

We'll see.

RPT-US drafts UN resolution urging nuclear disarmament

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 11 (Reuters) - The United States has drafted a U.N. Security Council resolution calling on all countries with atomic weapons to get rid of them, a text Washington hopes will be approved by a special council session presided over by U.S. President Barack Obama.

The 15-nation council will debate the draft resolution on Sept. 24 on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the General Assembly, where Obama is making his debut appearance at the United Nations. Washington holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council during September.

Would be nice for a change. I went through that whole "Cold War" period and it wasn't conducive to an intelligent child's health.

The nuclear disarming is aimed at Pakistan, Iran, North Korea, maybe Syria and others thinking about getting into the club. Also pressure to make Israel show what it has.

Nuclear weapons as deterrents have never been so important as they are now. The technology and know how is attainable for anyone, even private interests. No one can close the Pandora's Box now.

Obama knows this, but may be succumbing to pressures beyond his office. No one really know his overall agenda. I'm not convinced the long term security of the US is necessarily part of it.

Showdown between the West in retaliation for blowing up the WTC Death Star

We can only hope, as the Op says that if we don't watch out we could be looking at peace. Wouldn't that be the coolest Christmas gift we could give ourselves and the rest of the world for 2010

There's nothing you can do that can't be done. Nothing you can sing that can't be sung. Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game. It's easy. All you need is love - Beatles

Reminds me of another president - JFK. Right around the time Russia was trying to slip missiles into Cuba.

Obama will have to isolate Iran, by building a world consensus against and yes, involving a coalition of nations. George Bush Sr. understood that when he isolated Iraq. George Bush Jr didn't.
