I do believe that they are trying to celebrate HG Wells' Birthday in style. What better way than to create a similar hysteria (although not the same) as when they broadcasted War of the Worlds on the wireless and people thought it was real.

Interesting, those coordinates are SW of London near Woking, but HG Wells' birthplace is SE of London in Bromley.
