ANSA) - Turin, August 25 - An Italian woman who has apparently recovered from a killer nerve disease after a visit to Lourdes said Tuesday she had been offered ''a gift'' rather than a miracle.
Speaking after an expert in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's Disease called her case inexplicable, 50-year-old Antonia Raco said: ''For the moment I'd rather talk about a gift, an act of mercy, rather than a miracle''.
When she was in the 'healing' bath at Lourdes on August 5, she said, ''I felt a voice telling me to get up and a feeling of someone lifting me, and I realised something was happening''.
After returning home, she said, the voice told her to tell her husband ''and I got up in front of him, did a twirl and walked over to him''.
''Now I'm walking, I'm never tired and I don't feel any pain. It's like I've had a second chance,'' said Raco before returning from a check-up with ALS expert Adriano Chio' to her home village in the southern Italian region of Basilicata.

Of course i'm not going to claim that what has happened is actually some miracle, but i'd say that it's exetremely STRANGE, and i'm not the only who thinks so.
What makes the story almost incredible is that there's also some specialist statement about this case:
Chio', a doctor who has been treating Raco at Italy's top ALS specialist hospital in Turin, said her case could not be explained.

''I have never seen anything like it in ALS sufferers,'' said Chio' after examining Raco at the northern city's Molinette Hospital.
''The diagnosis was unequivocal. The disease can slow down...but we don't think it can improve because it irreversibly impairs neurons''.
''What we have seen is a regression of the disease, which we believe is scientifically impossible''.
''It is not explainable with the means at our scientific disposal,'' he said.
''I myself will have to take some time to process this phenomenon,'' said the specialist, who stressed that any talk of a miracle was up to the Catholic Church. Chio' said Raco had been in a wheelchair when he last examined her in June.

I mean, it's a neurologist, a specialist of the nervous system the one who's stating that what happened is not explainable with the means at our scientific disposal, and it also seems that in this specific case there was no way to improve because of irreversibly impairs neurons.
Some woman recovered after that travel to Lourdes, where who really know what happened, and a neurologist, the chief of the team for the treatment of THIS specific disease at the hospital "Molinette" of Tourin, (250 patients in treatment) stated that

''What we have seen is a regression of the disease, which we believe is scientifically impossible''

Anyway, miracle or not, i'm happy she's walking again, that disease is horrible.

Another type of miracle that i wish would happen is that whenever the some people have nothing to add to the discussion would shut TF up rather than posting off topic crap.

Before I read the story I assumed that this woman would be a very religious person, perhaps even somewhat fanatical about her faith, because I think that very strong faith and trust can have a significant effect on the body in a positive way. (Even though I have never heard of anyone recovering from ALS.)

But this woman does not even mention God, which surprised me, I expected her to talk about little else than God or Jesus or angels. Or is there perhaps some cultural difference here that would explain that she doen't mention God spesifically in the interview?

This is a fascinating story. It is a happy one, but it also brings back some bad memories for me personally. A friend of mine died from ALS some years ago, and it was a long and painful process. She also left behind two little boys, only 3 and 6 years old.

For some strange reason I have always been facinated with Lourdes. I really believe something has happened there. I think that Fatima is facinating. I am not Catholic. S&F interesting story, hope her health will continue to improve.

that is an awesome story. S&F! I do believe miracles can, and do happen often, all over the world. I really wasnt expecting to see the neurologist talking about this, but i think he is more baffled than I am. Bless that woman, I hope she lives a long, long life.

Maybe that's how they're keeping Stephen Hawking alive, or something similar.

My best friend's uncle died of ALS. I hope they find a cure soon, I've participated in many fundraising events for the cause.

Miracles are a tenent of the church.Theres actually a place at Lourds filled with crutchs of those who came crippled and left walking.Its hard to keep faith,especeily nowadays.The miracles are just a reminder.Why isnt everyone cured you may ask?Who's to question the way of the Lord?

Please, no one believe that i want to give some religious facet to the event: i'm just interested in WHAT happened, and what happened is out of the ordinary for sure, and has been confirmed by one of the best specialists in Europe. Let's call it miracle or let's call it Mikey Mouse, it has happened anyway. I'm just happy because of this event, a woman condemned to stick on a wheelchair is now walking again, i have nothin' more to ask to god as sign of his existence, but i don't want to impose this as proof of anything: im not here to impose my beliefs: im just sharing.
And let's assume that she is some fanatic: since when fanatism make you heal from ALS?

This is a great, albeit weird, find. But, I guess you have to believe in miracles...

I am one who believes that the ability to perform miracles ended with the death of the Apostles in the first century.

If these were real then why couldn't a man with only one leg, be healed and walk out of Lourdes with two? Why is it always some internal disorder that suddenly gets "healed" instead of some disfigurement that is plain to all onlookers?

The priests know this is a scam but they are content to profit from desperate people,
