I have just read a few articles of a discovery that high energy gamma rays travel slower than their lower energy counterparts originating from the same black hole event.

This is amazing as this shows that Einstein's theory of relativity is violated. All photons should travel at the speed of light, regardless of their wavelength or energy.

New physics must come from this discovery.

Light (photons) have a quantum habit of fooling everyone. Since photons have no "mass" they should not be affected by black holes anyway. But since they are, maybe certain wave lengths have different "high" and "low" properties.

Just a guess. Please don't take it to heart.

Please don't ignore what's written in the paper:


Perhaps the anomaly has a mundane explanation. We do not really understand the processes within objects such as Markarian 501 that accelerate particles to phenomenal energies and catapult them towards us. They are thought ultimately to have something to do with the convulsions of supermassive black holes at the objects' hearts. It could be that these mechanisms naturally spew out low-energy particles before high-energy ones.


And this is fundamentally true -- there is just such possibility.

light can be slowed in certain medium. . . perhaps the lower energy particles are lower because they had to sweep out a path to get to us. . . .

since the lower energy particles have already "cleared the road" later particles travel through more vaccum and less medium
