US Econ Adviser Claims Success: Fewer People Searching 'Economic Depression' on Google

macedoniaonline.eu

I'm sorry...I almost can't even POST this with a straight face....

Of all the statistics pouring into the White House every day, top economic adviser Larry Summers highlighted one today to make his case that the economic free-fall has ended.

The number of people searching for the term “economic depression” on Google is down to normal levels, Summers said.

“We pledged at the time the Recovery Act became law that some of the spending and tax effects would begin almost immediately.,” Summers said in prepared remarks. “We also noted that the impact of the Recovery Act would build up over time, peaking during 2010 with about 70 percent of the total stimulus provided in the first 18 months. Now, five months after the passage, we are on track to meet that timeline. “

So relax folks, since searching for the term 'economic depression' has returned to 'normal' levels, it must mean everything is going to be just fine.

What I didn't read is...what are the number of searches for 'oh crud, we're sooo boned?'

I don't think they're looking at all sides of this.

Maybe the millions of unemployed have just found work.

Maybe in one of Obama's community service programs.

Obama is the president.

Yup, I'm still depressed.

-Seriously, if they are just going by google, then why don't we have a "porn czar"?

Or maybe their Internet got cut off because they couldn't afford it anymore. Ergo people can't google.

Hey, Hey, Hey, don't give those jokers any ideas.

This is ridiculous, seems like they are grasping at straws. Or maybe there aren't so many searches because people see the writing on the wall and don't want to read anymore depressing news.

Larry Summers is a crooked turd and any honest Wall Streeters(or any dishonest ones) out there know exactly what I'm talking about. Very few are able to so blatantly lie to everyone and get away with it, as this man is VERY important to the bottom line of many institutions.

He has spent 20 years positioning himself, and he has been and still is the focus of several conflict of interest investigations most of which went nowhere due to stonewalling. I could go on. Hell I could publish volumes on the corruption mechanism that is Larry Summers.

As in the unemployed may have found some work, but maybe they don't know it yet.

Manual labor anybody? How about a union? How about the federal government is now bailing out its large corporations and even state governments so there goes capitalism and here comes socialized reform.

Computer at pawn shop, electricity off, so no googling!

Or, maybe it is just a given at this point. No need to search, the Depression is obviously upon us!

Maybe they should see what Google searches for "Survival Gear" are doing! Or check the ammunition sales, see how those are doing. Or compare the sales of Beans and Rice vs. Twinkies and Coca Cola!

I am sure there are plenty of trends going the other way!

That's what I'M talkin' about. We would of course need to search for an explanation, so that we can identify it...I think now everyone just knows what the deal is.

The point I thought was interesting sort of slipped by quietly. And that was that this guy read from a 'prepared statement.'

Not anything new, I know, but it made me think that they really, really wanted to use this as a sign and went through enough trouble to write a friggin' SPEECH around some obscure index of common search terms.

So the fact that no one is searching it anymore means that everything is ok. Geez. Grasp at straws much?
