To the south of Cairns is the highest freestanding natural pyramid in the world. You could be forgiven for thinking it is a tree covered man-made pyramid - the shape is almost perfect. But no, this is a natural phenomenon that is one of the most distinctive landmarks for the small sugar-farming town of Gordonvale.

Walsh's Pyramid is used for hiking. The mountain is 922 metres tall, and quite steep so you need to be fit and healthy to make the climb. For experienced hikers, the ascent and descent can take approximately 3 hours. Allow for longer if you are not an avid hiker or if you are taking kids with you.

The vegetation on the mountain is heavy, consisting mainly of Australian scrub. Rocks feature heavily, so if it is raining you'll need to be careful not to slip. Take plenty of water with you and make sure to apply sunscreen regularly. The scenery from the top of the pyramid is spectacular and takes in 360-degree views ­ it makes the climb worth all the effort.

Legend of Gympie and the Gympie Pyramid

The Gympie Pyramid located in the outskirts of Gympie in Queensland, Australia is a terraced structure that some claim was built by ancient Egyptians long before Europeans came to Australia, while others say it was built by an Italian vineyard owner in the 1950s.
Constructed from granite blocks, it stands about 100 feet tall. A small idol was allegedly dug up around the same area that some say is a representation of the Egyptian god Thoth in ape form clutching the Tau or the Cross of Life. This statue is now on display in the Gympie Museum.

According to Rex Gilroy, the man who discovered the pyramid and who runs the museum, it was created by Egyptians who had mining operations in Australia centuries ago, with bases of operation reaching as far as the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. Other objects have been purportedly found in the area including scarabs, coins and even an Easter Island type head.

The town of Gympie, at Tin Can Bay, north of Brisbane, Queensland, is the unlikely site of a pyramid complex. The first Europeans to come into the area in the 1830's learned of them from the now extinct Kabi speaking people of Gympie, known then as the Dhamuri. According to the Aboriginals, brown skinned, blue eyed, blond haired beings wearing dolphin pendants came from Orion long ago and built pyramids and temple sites, but water covered them all.

The ruins were taboo to them. Settlers took the stones of the pyramids and other buildings and used them as foundation stones for the main street of Gympie and the construction of buildings, including the local church, which still stands. There were stone statues like the Easter Island statues and also animal statues. These have since been destroyed or are hidden, but photos and sketches of them remain from the first white man to come into the area. Even the tunnels under Gympie were dynamited.

All but one of the Pyramids was bulldozed into the ocean by the army in the 1950's and the lone survivor remains on private land with a strict "no trespassing policy. The Pyramid is 100 foot high and designed with a series of terraces up to 4 feet tall and eight feet wide. The army sealed the entrance in the 1930's after investigating reports of cattle wandering into the pyramid, when an opening was still accessible, and never coming out. No reports or findings are available.

In recent years, according to locals, the owner has attempted to destroy the pyramid in the hopes of discouraging visitors to the site. Artifacts have survived including the 'Gympie Ape', which was dug up in 1966 and is thought to be a statue of the Egyptian God Thoth, who was often portrayed as an ape, and another resembling Ganesha from Indian mythology. Got the above from a website typed Ancient and Lost Civilizations and went onto a website called CrystalLinks.

I've been past that one up near Cairns a few times, the main highway goes right beside it. It's a cool looking little mountain, would be a rough climb for sure but i'd love to see the view from the top some day.

yes they go to so much trouble to 'debunk' this gypmie pyramid to first year archaeology and anthropology students (one university of queensland professor was quoted in the newspaper article they showed as remarking that he wouldnt go and check out the pyramid becuz it was ridiculous and there wasnt one there. interesting attitude from a supposed scientist.) ; as well as debunking von dankien and hancock, that im starting to believe its true. wouldnt surprise me at all. there's a website on the gypmie pyramid by the people who were doing some excavations there. personally i think its likely to be true. there's bound to be pyramids or megaliths in australia; since they're everywhere else on the planet. actually theres photos on google earth of what look from air like pyramids in the desert in sth australia. dont know if they are or not. i always think australia's parliament house roof looks like a hollow pyramid. are they making a point that no one's aware of? i.e. there were pyramids here, but we knocked them down; and now the top of our parliament house is a pyramid in some sort of a tribute. ? perhaps.

a uni in norway i think became quite interested in the oz pyramids and so an archaeologist was sent out quickly to 'debunk it ' and hush the whole thing up.

there's been a cover up in new zealand too, re: pre maori stone ruins and burials of people with white skin/red hair; - allegations that mummies were bulldozed; burials dynamited/buried with rubble. there are still some stone structures in waiapo (cant spell it) forest. a google search shud reveal some stuff. and i think non native plants were also found in nz which are a bit out of place..

I had a work lunch today, somehow the topic came up regarding the fist people in NZ.

I naturally retold the story of the 'lost' TVNZ footage of the European style bridge in the South Island that was somehow 'destroyed'.

The topic/issue is devisive.
