An independent public inquiry should be held into how suicide terrorists were able to carry out the July 7 bombings, Scotland Yard’s former head of counter-terrorism says.

Andy Hayman, who was Assistant Commissioner for Special Operations at the time of the bombings in 2005, is the first figure from the security establishment to break ranks and call for an open inquiry.

Mr Hayman says: “Incidents of less gravity have attracted the status of a public inquiry"

It reminds me of the delay before the 911 commission was set up. The problem with the 7/7 attacks was that at least one of the 'bombers' (depending on what you believe) was a known assocaite of terrorists and had been followed and bugged. So putting asside any conspiracy theories an inquiry would have major legal concequences.

I personally believe that it was a covert op conducted by MI5/6 as a method for drumming up further supprot in Iraq, at a time when public support and condemnation was increasing.

It's also very important to note that such a higly ranked establishment figure has called out the government on its failure.

As the truth of what happenned on 7/7 and 911 is discovered, there will be more dissent heard from leading public figures.
