Doesn't need to be the exact type of 747 as most people wouldn't know a -100 from a -400

Hard to say, and the news outlets could be wrong, but look at paragraph one of the story I linked:

NEW YORK - A Boeing 747 used by the president was escorted over lower Manhattan by an Air Force fighter jet Monday as part of a government photo opportunity and training mission, causing a brief panic among office workers near where hijacked passenger jets crashed into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Check out this paragraph from the MSNBC story - you're gonna LOVE this:

The NYPD said the flight "was authorized by the FAA for the vicinity of the Statue of Liberty, with directives to local authorities not to disclose information about it, but to direct all inquiries to the FAA."

www.msnbc.msn.com...

So it seems like the whole excuse about the early warning system breaking down was a crock of BS.

It's actually looking like they were doing this on purpose! I wonder if they were studying public panic?

They say "local authorities," were advised but directed not to disclose information? Who in NYC did they tell? And that person wouldn't inform the mayor? That makes no sense whatsoever.

So we know that no local or state authorities were notified. So what was really going on?

I did see that, but how many times has the press got things wrong. Can anyone get a clear image of the tail of the AF1 pictured? The tail should be numbered wither 28000 or 29000.

There was also a 747 dressed up for when they filmed Air Force One (the film with Harrison Ford in it), and this also caused a scare when it had decals painted on and two F-16 pilots thought it was the real plane. As far as I know, the mocked up plane is still in Air Force One colours for other film work. Could this be the same plane on charter?

To the untrained eye it would look like the president's plane.

Get me a good enough shot of the tail area so i can see which plane it was.

I think whoever organised this "mission" knew that the mayor any other state authorities wouldn't give permission or would probably kick up a fuss if they were informed.

This just sums up the lack of respect for "THE PEOPLE".

Boy Blunder is well known for his love of photo-ops. Even though he wasn't aboard, he still had to spread his spoor around like a dog to say "Look at me!".

I don't think I've ever seen a dumber administration.

Pretty [snip] stupid if you ask me. Of all the places in the world to fly a 747 just 1000 feet off the ground for a photo op, they choose lower Manhattan!!!

My Dad was in one of the buildings that was evacuated. He said people were utterly confused and scared. The evacuation was not directed by the building security either- people apparently made the decision on their own to get out...

Here is a video from the Jersey side. There was certainly some panic on the streets when this thing flew over. It may not have been 20 feet from the buildng but I can see why someone might think it was that close...

This is about as thoughtful as turning up to a Bah Mitzvah in an SS uniform.

Really... why is anybody surprised that New Yorkers would be terrified by a low flying 747 overhead? Talk about insensitive.

If this was really authorized by the government, without prior warning, then whoever authorized it needs to be fired straight away.

Can your government really get any stupider?

You know if they were doing a "photo shoot" shouldnt they have waited for a nice day to do it? I mean dont get me wrong I am not accusing anyone of anything but simple common sense would say to wait for a nice day.

According to a documentary i saw no more than 4 hours ago the fighters first escorted Air Force One on 9/11. Before then it had never had military jet escorts but who knows.

I'm pretty sure even before 9/11, Air Force One has fighter escorts whenever it is outside of the CONUS.

Id say the cost would be similar to that of obamas little pizza party a few weeks ago.,Which of course we have no idea of the cost of that one either, gotta love his "transparency."

The pizza was free. The pizzeria owner didn't get a single nickel.
Think of all the free publicity he got for his shop.

LMAO at the people trying to make this a political issue. Very transparent partisan hatred. I highly doubt the President even knew this was going down.

The "photo op", could very well be a cover story for what the plane was really doing. Maybe it was to test secret AA gun system installed in NYC ? Maybe someone thought the AF1 pilots should have training in making drastic emergency maneuvers in a sky scraper environment ? I don't know.

I can sympathize with people who were freaked out thinking of 9/11, but I think it's paranoid to believe it was a psychological operation, that the Air Force was purposefully trying to scare people.

And I imagine you would have the same neutral view if this had happened under Bush's watch? Oh, wait. Sorry. This is the MESSIAH we are talking about. Sorry.

As much as I am shocked by this stunt, I am not surprised. We have a man child in the Oval Office. He is a narcissist. His own needs, and even selfish whims, come before those of the people he has sworn an oath to protect and serve. Is there not an adult in this administration who could have thought this through and flagged it as being a bad idea? It makes one ponder 'what other fantastic errors in judgement are being conceived in this White House?' First take away the CIA's ability to protect us and then scramble a jet to follow a 747 above a city that is still healing after a terror attack. It's baffling folks. The local authorities were told about it, but also told it was classified. Seriously, wtf!

Just one more piece of evidence showing how out of touch - in spite of what they say - obama and his staff are with the real American public.

Wouldn't any moron figure out something like this ahead of time?

I'm confused.

Obama's spokesperson has stated that they are clueless as to what this event was about - that's another issue altogether! But why are people criticizing the administration when there is some doubt as to what actually happened and whether this was the actual AF1 substitute or a mock-up?

Did I miss something? It seems to me that there are still a lot of unanswered questions.

I am so happy Obama is President, it is instances like this that reassure me that he is focused on the issues with laser-like intensity.

The official explanation is that the White House was updating the Air Force One file photo.
news.yahoo.com...
That sounds like a complete BS story to me. These people can't be that stupid.

I guess we are to believe that there is nobody in the Obama administration with enough sense to figure out that you can take a photo of the plane anywhere and photoshop in the backround of the Statue of Liberty.

If they can't figure that out then maybe someone should be smart enough to schedule the flyover over on weekend and not on Monday morning while everyone is at work.

Pretty sure this is what there were doing....but with "Air Force 1" being the plane being photographed, probably by the F-16

Yep, I'm smart enough to realize the POTUS doesn't have much oversight or involvement in the day to day activities of the Air Force.

I sure do agree with you.
Why Manhatten ?
This sounds very fishy to me.
These are strange times we're living in.
I can't imagine how scared these people were when they seen this.

I think perhaps someone was trying to show you what a 'real' boeing plane looks like flying that fast through NYC's skylines.

Im at work, cant view the video only the stills, but i cant wait for someone to spot something unusual then compare it to the 911 images.

Yeah, then people will see that they are were all planes, shot from hundreds of angles from private photographers.
, then people saying they weren't planes on 9/11 will finally shut up...nah, you'll find an excuse to believe in your fairytale...I like how you got 2 stars already for saying something about 9/11 but my legitimate image that I posted of a shot of planes being photographed over the Statue of Liberty was completely ignored.
