But as First Lady Michelle Obama demonstrated in her meeting with the Queen of England, sometimes just behaving as 'the friendly American' can lead to an unexpected faux pas.

Twitter and other sources have been abuzz with this story since Wednesday night, when Michelle Obama briefly put her arm over Queen Elizabeth's shoulder at a reception. This was allegedly in response to the Queen lightly touching Michelle around the waist.

Some British and American commentators were aghast. One is never supposed to touch the Royal Person.

But the royal family seems unriled by the gesture. Buckingham Palace has issued a statement that no impropriety had taken place.

Personally, I love it. Go Michelle!
