U.S. �crossing the rubicon?�

Observers fear that the Missile Defense Agency�s request for $68 million for the Near Field Infrared Experiment (NFIRE) will result in the weaponization of space. NFIRE is a project designed to monitor the exhaust plumes of surface rocket launches; it also contains a small kill vehicle that could theoretically be used to disable an oncoming missile or another low-earth orbit satellite. Critics fear that this may be the first step towards weaponizing space. According to one senior government official, "We're crossing the Rubicon into space weaponization."
