Small molecule offers hope for cancer treatment

A small, non-toxic molecule may soon be available as an inexpensive treatment for many forms of cancer, including lung, breast and brain tumours, say University of Alberta researchers.

But there's a catch: the drug isn't patented, and pharmaceutical companies may not be interested in funding further research if the treatment won't make them a profit.

In findings that "astounded" the researchers, the molecule known as DCA was shown to shrink lung, breast and brain tumours in both animal and human tissue experiments.

"You typically get this eureka type of feeling. It's the most exciting thing a scientist can get," Dr. Evangelos Michelakis, a professor at the University of Alberta department of medicine and a key study author, told CTV News.

The study was published Tuesday in the journal Cancer Cell.

The molecule appears to repair the damage that cancer cells cause to mitochondria, the units that convert food into energy.

"Cancer cells actively suppress their mitochondria, which alters their metabolism, and this appears to offer cancer cells a significant advantage in growth compared to normal cells, as well as protection from many standard chemotherapies," Michelakis said in a written statement.

As mitochondria regulate cell death, cancer cells can resist being killed off.

For years, DCA -- or dichloroacetate -- has been used to treat children with inborn errors of metabolism due to mitochondrial diseases.

Until recently, researchers believed damage to mitochondria in cancer cells was permanent.

But Michelakis questioned this theory and began testing DCA, which activates a critical enzyme, as a way to "revive" cancer-affected mitochondria.

Greece has produced a multitude of great personalities that shaped the world. Dr Evangelos Michelakis may be about to be the next one, something that makes a lot of people in my country proud.

Proudness though is not the most importand aspect of it.

Both in Greece, Canada, USA and the rest of the world people get a chance to get cured by the so called illness of the century, by the observation made by the Canada based Greek scientist in the University of Alberta.

Please watch the video, star flag and post comments for everyone to see this and get rid of Cancer once and for all despite pharmaceutical companies not being interested.
They have not much of interest in the discovery that will NOT make them millions since it is readily available and inexpensive!

something similar but accidental

Patrick McCarthy, a pre-medical student, who previously referred to his general chemistry lab requirement as “the dumbest thing [he's] ever heard of,” has discovered the cure for cancer, Nature News reports. McCarthy, 22, discovered a special class of polyphenolics during last Monday’s extraction of the compounds from apples, says John Strova, a sixth-year graduate teaching assistant. “The students were required to complete an extraction of the antioxidants and complete a calibration curve to determine phenol activity,” Strova told the Associated Press. “Pat’s research results were mind-blowing. I didn’t even know this level of antioxidant activity was possible. But there’s an Excel chart to prove it.”

I am owwed at how this thread massively underperform compared to others.
I mean here is some serious news on health and the big problem of cancer
compared to the ones below.
I do not mean anything against those threads but is it normal?
Are we ok or are we overly paranoid?

The DCA article went public over two years ago. It's a shame that it doesn't get more publicity, but at least they are still working on it.

This is old news and unfortunately never got the attention it deserved; even locally. Through fund raising they at least have a government approved study under way, with positive results so far. Once completed will hopefully give them the publicity it deserves if proven effective.

hopefully something will come of this.
cancer is all around us. we are all vunerable to it no matter what our family history. my step dad is in his mid forties and was diagnosed a few years ago with cml. it is in remission now but it will eventually kill him. imagine having too live with that every day...

I've heard this story repeated for at least four years now. When are they going to do something about this already? It must be either very effective or we're missing some critical information here.

Dichloroacetate isn't a drug.
Its a compound.

Thats the whole point.

Its like attempting to trademark salt or carbon dioxide.

And sadly, yes.. its very old news indeed.
Visit the medic/drugs forum and you'll get to taste the poison..

For holy gawds sake DO NOT try to either make or take this stuff yourself unless you just so happen to be a chemist or a pharmacist and know what your doing and how metabolic dosages work.

I'm sorry.

I know that a lot of people are looking for answers and the medical profession doesnt seem to provide them but this is a serious case of DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!

You will kill yourself.

DCA is not something you can brew up in your bathtub.
Its an acid and will run through you like the worst case scenario of a bad sci fi horror flick.
