Moscow rebuffs Obama's secret Iran-missile shield deal

WOW

www.france24.com...

"This is not productive," said Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday, talking about US President Barack Obama's secret proposition to halt the US missile shield programme in Europe in exchange for help on the Iran nuclear issue.

AFP - US President Barack Obama has written his Russian counterpart about the relationship between US plans to deploy a missile defense system in Europe and the Iranian "threat," a senior US official said Tuesday.

But the overture was rebuffed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who said in Spain Tuesday that it was "not productive" to link talks over a US missile defense system in Europe with Iran's suspected nuclear program as proposed by Washington.

"If we are to speak about some sort of exchange, the question has not been presented in such a way, because it is not productive," Medvedev said when asked about a letter US President Barack Obama wrote to him regarding the two issues.

"Our American partners are ready to discuss this problem," the Russian leader added at a joint news conference with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. "This is already good."

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Obama suggested in a secret letter to Medvedev that he would back off deployment of the missile defense shield if Moscow would help stop Iran from developing long-range missiles.

Confirming that Obama sent a letter to Medvedev, a White House official told AFP on condition of anonymity that the missive covered "a broad range of topics including missile defense and how it relates to the Iranian threat."

What?

Someone help me with this one.

I would take anything that Putin has to say with a grain of salt.
Also I have a feeling the Russians are trying to play a little hardball with Obama. They did the same thing with Kennedy they may think he is too young and inexperience and they may feel they can push him around a bit.

Also by releasing this they may feel that it shows some sort of weakness on the US side or some sort of frustration that we cannot stop the Iranians from deploying their missiles and the Russians could be trying to reveal this secret letter to the world to prove such.

We will see if Obama and Clinton can work as a team on this. Good catch.

Obama raised the possibility in a letter to Russia seeking help in trying to end Iran's nuclear program, a senior administration official said. Contrary to news reports, it was not a secret letter, the official said

Well it seems the US is playing this one right out in the open and could be the opposite of what I state earlier the US could be trying to pressure the Russians into agreeing to put pressure on the Iranians and if they balk it could show the world that the Russians are the ones who have no or little clout on Tehran
Stay tuned people

in other thread about the Obama's proposal I stated my opinion that it is a completly wrong idea. so I reap it here now as it happened to be proved:

"first of all, Russia would loose much more (last country they do have a good relations with in the oil arab world, gas union they created with Iran, ...) so it is not going to happen.

second, Iran has no possibilities to threat the world with nuke. Israel won't let this talks to happen cause it is their game anyway.

and third, if US won't finalize the deal with Poland they will loose the one of the strongest allies. Poles are on all wars started by US in last 10 years and nothing git in return for that.

so, I think that by making such a proposals he is not going to achive anything but he risks a lot.

I am not a supporter of the wars the US has started in last years, especially that I belive that 911 was a inside job, and we all know what evidence thay used to attack Iraq. but the program to install the shield in central europe was to protect against attacks. and I found it as a possibly the intrument against the wars for a change"
