Hi everyone. I've never saw anything weird in the skies before but last night at around 7.30pm (Sunday March 1st 2009) I noticed the beautiful night sky with stars all around. I mentioned it to my girlfriend and she said how lovely it looked then said, "Look at that one, it's moving."

Basically it looked like a star but it was moving slowly in a southern, maybe south-western direction. I am located in North Belfast in Northern Ireland. We typically don't get a great view of starry skies where I live due to light pollution and skies overcast with cloud!

I went to grab the camcorder but was unable to get any footage as when I came out of the house I couldn't find the moving light again. The girlfriend lost sight of the light but then saw it again - I couldn't though and was asking her to take the camcorder to see if she could get some film but she said it was fading out of view then said it was gone before we could get anything.

Even after reviewing the camcorder it didn't pick up the stars well so I'm not sure if the camcorder would have caught it anyway.

I am thinking it was a satellite of some sort. It was far, far to high up to be a plane or helicopter. We get planes and helicopters over us regularly and they typically aren't that high up and can be well heard.

Does anyone know of a way of finding out if a satellite was passing my location at that time and date.

Even if it was a satellite, it was my first experience of something odd so I was buzzing for a while. Quite exciting!

The sky looked amazing with a crescent moon, venus, some flickering (seems to flicker a greeny/blue colour) star in a south-east direction and all the other stars about along with the strange moving light.

If anyone can add any information I would be most delighted.

Check out Heavens Above.

Just plug in your location and search. It will tell you what's passing by.

Between 7:27pm and 8:00pm you had 8 man made satellites make a visible pass over your location.

Best Candidate: An old Cosmos (2151) Rocket Body passed at 7:40pm from about North to about South.

I can't say what it was that you witnessed, but I do want to relate something we saw a few weeks ago.

My husband and I were walking over to our other building just after it had gotten dark. It was a very cold night with a clear sky and he pointed out how bright a particular star was. I looked toward it and knew right away it was the planet Venus, but just passing over a bit to the west of it was a fairly fast moving bright object.

From our position it was easy to see the massive solar panels that give the International Space Station it's distinctive look. I was quite pleased to have seen it because even when I've looked at the NASA page to try and get a position I always had poor viewing conditions.

Any clear night you go out you'll likely see some man made objects passing over. The night sky is getting very crowded with all the stuff in orbit and solar panels give off a good reflection that can be seen with the naked eye.

These would be hard to photograph without a good camera on a tripod, and depending on the exposure time the satellites and other junk will appear as a streak of light on the picture.

Keep your eyes up folks, you never know what you might see.

I just want to add two links to this thread that lets you track the International Space Station. You can see it's orbital position and where it will be over the next three orbits.

It's one of the easiest man made objects to spot with the naked eye, and with binoculars or small telescope the detail is amazing.
I hope some of you go out and try to spot it, best viewing is just after dark or before sunrise.

starting in January 2009, I began to notice that the stars looked brighter and there was more of them than there usually is. I then started noticing that the brighter stars were moving in a way that I had never seen. It was like they were swimming through the night sky like a jellyfish. Once I saw them moving,I became almost obsessed with watching them. I would lay out and watch them for hours every night. Then I realized that EVERY star is moving! It's just easier to track the brighter ones, but they are all moving the same weird way. I watched continously, trying to find a pattern in the directions they were moving in, but couldn't. I am a big believer in God and try to read some of the bible every day, so when I saw this, it immediately reminded me af Acts 2:19 when God is speaking of the time of judgement and He says"AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE"(New American Standard Bible). Also, the book of Enoch (which isn't in the bible, but should be) could explain what's going on as well. Enoch was Noah's great-grandfather. In Genseis 5:21-24 it says this about Enoch:'21Enoch lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Methuselah. 22Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters. 23So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.' In his book Enoch says that while he walked with God, he was shown and explained by the angels all the secrets of heaven and sheol (the abyss, hell). I can't go into the whole book of Enoch here, but if you are interested in reading it for yourself you can read it free at www.sacred-texts.com/bib/boe. I personally believe that a person needs to read AND UNDERSTAND the book of Enoch before he/she can even begin to grasp how things work and God's plan for us.
We are going to focus on the stars here though. Now according to Enoch, stars come forth to earth through portals in heaven. Each individual star by itself, according to their number and their names, their courses and their positions, and their times and their months. Through each of these small portals pass the stars of heaven and run their course to the west on the path which is shown to them and God has appointed. And he calls on them by their name and they hearken unto Him. Each is weighed in a righteous balance according to their proportions of light. And Enoch asked the angel what this mystery was and the angel told him that the stars are the holy who dwelt upon the earth and believe in the name of the Lord of Spirits for ever and ever. It also says that He appoints a judge for each of them so none will hinder. So, basically they have a little bubble that they have to stay in and follow their appointed paths, but they can move all around in that bubble. Now, knowing that stars are the righteous that have been here on earth and worship the Lord day and night, another verse comes to mind that might make sense of things: Revelation 6:9-11 says: 9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow bondsmen and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been. Could it be that the stars moving in the sky is a sign that the souls have awakened and are asking when it will be time? Just a few thoughts to ponder on. Sorry it was so long, but it's hard to speak of a complex subject as this one in only 4000 words. I hope at least someone gains some knowlege from this. Thank you for your time.

I had a very similar experience about a week after this, on the 7th or 8th.

I was sitting outside with a few friends around a camp fire. The night was very clear and there were many visible stars. While they were talking, I was looking at the stars. One star in particular caught my attention because it appeared to be moving very slowly.

I grew up in the country and I was always a bit of a star-gazer. I know what a satellite looks like. This was not a satellite, or at least it wasn't like any satellite that I have seen before. Usually you can track a satellite all the way across the sky but this "object" was moving down instead of across the sky. It was slower than any other moving object that I had ever seen before. Much slower than a falling star or satellite.

As I am watching it, it starts to get brighter. This starts to blow my mind a little bit, so I interrupt my friends to get them to look at it too. I point it out to them and at this point it is much brighter than Venus. Then as quickly as it charged up, it just fades out and moves away.

I have no idea what it was but I do know what it was not. It was not a falling star. It was not an airplane. It was not a normal satellite.

It looked a lot like the "UFO"'s that have been filmed at the Gilliland ranch in Washington.

It is similar to what is shown in this video. WARNING SOME ADULT LANGUAGE.

What we see in the video is a typical out of focus image of a bright point light source such as a very bright star (eg. Sirius) or planet (eg. Venus) or satellite (eg. ISS).

There is a very simple way to determine if these kind of images are focus effects or real 'orb' like bodies relatively close to Earth. If the image will get smaller and brighter as the camera focus is adjusted, then the source is out of focus. Increasing the apparent size of an image by altering the focus setting is absolute proof that the image is not seen correctly and is therefore worthless as a true record of the source. The correct focus and therefore the true image is always and irrefutably the smallest that the lens can produce without altering the zoom. The shimmering or 'rotating' effects seen in this video and most recordings of similar phenomena is caused by light scintillation. This is a common atmospheric effect due to turbulence and is merely light refraction. If amateur sky watchers would learn to use their cameras correctly, maybe we'd see less meaningless blurs and more recordings of actual value.

That was a bad video. There are other videos of Gililland getting the lights to "charge up". That is what I saw. It was as if a star slowly moved down and charged up to be 2x the brightness of Venus, then faded away.
