300lb car bomb found in village

news.bbc.co.uk

A 300lb car bomb has been found in Castlewellan, County Down, on Saturday.

It follows a five-day security alert when a telephoned warning on Tuesday claimed a bomb had been left in the village.

It is thought the car-bomb was abandoned by dissident republicans, who were trying to target the Ballykinler army base.

Albeit not damaging as the provisional IRA, but one cannot help notice the rapid occurrence of "old problems" resurfacing in Britain. Hauntingly similar to the 1970s.

The Northern Ireland Police service have warned about the possibility of a major dissident attack (bombing campaign) and this car bomb seems to be the evidence.

We've seen recent attacks last year, booby-trap on a Catholic officer, and numerous shootings along the border with the Irish Republic.

This car bomb highlights the dissident group may be in a minority; but it is well armed, financed and skilled to operate an armed campaign.
