Central California, Dec 12, no earthquake, no funny animal actions, still waiting for a news report.

Most likely California location which falls into the 32-36 latitude is Coalinga, our earthquake town. It is located in a fertile valley, and on or near the great San Andreas Fault. If the quake is in California, it will probably hit on this most active of locations. If it does, that means it is the San Andreas Fault, which runs from San Bernardino, through the Lancaster area, just south of the "Grapevine" on I-5, up the low level Sierra Madre Mountains to San Francisco.

Since San Francisco is located on a rocky and hilly surface, it is likely it will be greatly effected if this fault goes wild.

My guess, it will devastate the Castro district (hehe), our center for homosexuals, and the world will think it is God's judgment on gays.

Also, perhaps Ventura will slip into the sea, drowning the center for over 80% of the pornography photo studios in the world.

California has great assets to lose if the fault splits.

Of course, I wouldn't wish this on anyone, because there are so many innocent people involved in these areas.

Well, there are three days left. Either way, whether the earthquake happens or not, either the OP or N. Tesla is going to have to apologize for his/her actions (I'll drag N. Tesla by the legs if I have to
).

So far, I haven't noticed any strange activity, so I seriously doubt it's going to happen.

Very interesting site, I have to say. It is kind of funny how it matches - to the webbot in what they have said about some things, but based purely on planetary aspects.

thanks for the link.

It is early morning Dec 12th, I am about to get off from my 3rd shift job and go to bed. I do hope and pray that nothing happens today or in the coming days that match any web bot prediction, I checked UCGS site and IRIS, they are strangely inactive, the reports between the two sites don't match at all either. My prediction for where a large one could or might take place if it is to happen is the New Madrid fault, with a new fault line. I am basing that partially on fact and activity, partially on a dream and gut feeling.

Whatever happens or doesn't thanks for all the hard work you have done in this thread.

We are getting ready for major ice storm in the middle of the country.

Thanks,

We may be looking up because earthquakes cause land in some areas to sink and other places to rise up.

If an earthquake is strong enough it could cause a rift fault to split the US into two parts sending the Great Lakes rushing into the Gulf of Mexico.

Or not.

Maybe I am boring and just shouldn't ruin a good time with my party pooping...but plate tectonics doesn't work like that. Mountains (rising plates) are built slowly over time. When the plates spread apart the largest of quakes just move them by centimeters.

The only excitement in geology is vulcanism and even then it takes a certain type of volcano to give you that type of thrill and the seismic movement that would precede something like Yellowstone would be felt on both sides of the country days before it erupted.

We may yet have an earthquake because the world is in constant movement and many of the larger faults have hit their period this century. What size of quake? *shrugs*

As to the conjecture about the web bot and people like us creating self-fulfilling prophesies...anything is possible. Therefore, shouldn't we all then STOP talking about how terrible things are or could be and start immediately talking about how half full the glass is?

I have to agree with what you say, that (generally speaking) the largest of quakes only cause very minor movements of plates. However, this doesn't mean that smaller regions associated with plate boundaries (eg subduction zones and slip faults) cannot cause some limited-size land masses to move even several metres -- as happened with some areas around Bandah Aceh in the Dec 2004 quake. This is not to argue your own statement, just to say that there is a big difference between entire plates moving and localized events, which many may not be aware is more often the case.

As far as we know, plate tectonics work pretty much as you have said, but we don't have the sum total of all knowledge either about what has occurred in the long geological past, or what might occur in the future. A significant movement of a very large region is theoretically possible given the "right" conditions. In such a scenario even a movement of a few metres of a large, plate-related region could be highly devastating.

Web-bot statements or no, my own feeling is that nothing seriously destructive is likely in the next few days, either in the PNW region or New Madrid. The PNW with its Juan de Fuca subduction zone is clearly a matter of concern, considering its past history, but I don't feel it will be producing a devastating event between now and Monday Dec 15. Of curse, that's only my opinion, but until something either happens or it doesn't, opinions are all we really have to offer anyway.

Mmm, yes, and there are other sources too. That is why I called out the skeptics and debunkers to do the homework first before putting torches to Qa.

But its here now, and my bosses are frantic! Time to dig in....

You didn't mean Lancaster, PA did you?! Because first off I live right smack dab in the middle of lancaster PA, and secondly, I didn't think that the san andreas fault line ran all the way from PA to CA...

No, that is all part of California that he listed there. San Andreas goes down the coast of California. It doesn't come across the states.

there is a link - you can see the fault line

Officials evacuated Gypsy camps along the Tiber's banks and boats broke loose from their moorings in the surging water. The smaller Aniene river, which flows into the Tiber, already overflowed, forcing officials to close down some streets in Rome and evacuate hundreds of people.

"It is as if there has been an earthquake," Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno told the daily La Repubblica.

I was checking up on current events and ran into this article... interesting that the mayor related the flooding to an earthquake. Any thoughts?

I also posted this in the other earthquake thread.

OK, I was finally able to get a hold of the earthquake scientist Jim Berkland, the scientist that was able to accurately predict the 1994 Northridge, California earthquake before it happened. I asked him about this issue and everything being said about it.

I was told the following (and PLEASE note that I am NOT trying to make a prediction, nor scare anyone, I'm just stating what he said):

"Based on the nature of the supermoon phase of the period in and around December 12th, 2008, and the relationship of the heavenly bodies' gravitational pull towards the mainly affected fault zones on the Earth, I am able to estimate that there is an 85% probability that a magnitude 8 plus megaquake or a series of magnitude 8 plus megaquakes will strike in the New Madrid fault zone like happened previously in the years 1811-1812. This means that within a period of time from December 12th to roughly 2-3 weeks after that there is an 85% chance that a megaquake or a series of megaquakes will hit in the Arkansas/Missouri New Madrid fault zone area."

Are you serious? Did he really tell you that? It is one of those things, of - yeah I know it could happen, but I don't want to believe it actually will, because it just seems too impossible. I can't imagine what would happen.

Well, I have to add and say, and it is not just my imagination either.

My daughter has been sick for 3 days now - with MAJOR headaches!

My head and ears have been killing me. They do not hurt full time - it will come on real strong with the ears at the same time. My daughter will all of a sudden say her head was starting to hurt real bad at the same time.

I thought it is interesting, since I normally don't have headaches etc.

Well, tonight is the supermoon and the conjunction stuff. Lets pray hard that all of this comes to nothing and the world stays safe!

Just the first thought off the top of my mind, as a nurse, please tell me you do not have gas heaters in your house. I immediately thought carbon monoxide poisoning.
I found out one of the guys I work with has been on this thread watching. We openly talked about earthquakes at work today and yesterday. Actually no one laughed at the fact that I carry a whistle on my work key chain. We are far enough south that no major structural damage is predicted from a 8 -8.9 on the NMSZ, but you never know.

Here is hoping that nothing happens, but being prepared for the worst.
