Wooden Plank Found On Mars -- Debunked

www.examiner.com

This composite photo, taken by the Mars rover Opportunity in 2004, keeps resurfacing described as  a photo showing a wooden plank found on Mars. Look to the left side, just above the black rectangle shape.

What the heck are you looking at? NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) describes the panoramic image:

This cylindrical-projection view combines several frames from the navigation camera on NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. The rover acquired these frames during its 115th martian day, or "sol," in the Meridiani Planum region of Mars, on May 21, 2004. The rover was near the edge of "Endurance Crater," which dominates the right half of this view. The crater is about 130 meters (about 430 feet) in diameter.

NASA has debunked the belief that a photo taken on Mars includes a wooden plank, or anything like it. Turns out it was an outcropping of rock, which can break evenly as is shown in the picture. Seeing as there's no known life on Mars, and there's a lack of water except at the poles, it is unlikely trees can be found there to make a plank from. The only other possible conjecture is that it could have been imported by another visitor to Mars--but why?

Your 1st mistake is believing anything NASA tells us.

Sorry to break your heart, but they are an agenda run by the illuminati.

Keep your eyes on the skies though

I guess I can only speak for myself but, it doesn't look like anything else but a rock. I can see due to the shape how some might see a plank but really....I've seen rock formations like that here on earth.

there is water on mars under the surface they now say. but how can we say how life will react on mars, and what form it will take? How do we know it's a wood plank? how do we know it's just a rock?
we don't of course, and until we send a manned mission much will not be known.
But i know for a fact that i have seen image tampering out the wazoo with JPL and NASA/ they ARE and have been from the beginning, hiding something from us. The issue of image tampering is the first and most important step to understanding there is more than we are told. Why go through all the trouble to hide these things? obviously because it is HUGE news whatever it is. I just don't think we should say things like:
1.it's a rock! DUH!
2.or "that's not a rock! don't be so stupid!"
until we can touch it and analyze it, it is still guesswork. My question is this: Why are the greatest minds in the industry not giving the anomalys more attention? After all, the Cydonia face (one of the more "yea that just looks like a rock" issues IMO) was front page USA Today material, many more amazing things since then, with no where near the attention or study. that should set off a few red flags. somewhere, in the middle of both sides, is where the truth lies.

I think if there was a civilization who was advanced enough to have planks of wood, we would know about it.

Pictures of trees or even civilization would be leaked. No way, with the size of NASA's work force, and human error, would an employee not give someone something.

Why have all the "leaked" Nasa photos been of ambiguous shadows or bumps? So many photos that someone "died trying to get it out to the public" and yet, they are just things that could very well be rocks, and only, POSSIBLY, i]suggest anything significant.

We all know there is life out there, on mars, I don't think so, nothing advanced at least

I'm sorry to say but your comment is totally arrogant

(I think if there was a civilization who was advanced enough to have planks of wood, we would know about it.)

We are sheeple even tho we don't like to admit it

This is like saying we the Human race are the only intelligent life in the universe.

This is just more NASA bs if you ask me

Why can you see naked co-ed boobies on the internet with a $50 webcam that is SOOOO clear, you can make out every pore in the skin, but a $100 million dollar project cannot give anything but grainy black and white photos, and even worse ones in color?

I say put the pornographers in charge of the cameras that go on space probes.

(Note: Suggestion only partially in jest.)

Because it obviously makes more sense to believe that every trace of a civilization has been wiped clean from the surface including stones, metals, crystals, glass, etc - ALL GONE but this one wooden plank attatched to and part of nothing survives. AHA! PROOF of..................................

p.s. anyone know how to get wood with no plantlife whatsoever to harvest?

To quote the good doctor from Cornell :

"I'm convinced the photo shows a rock, just as the scientists say. That's just one opinion, of course."
-----------------------------------------------

How is that a debunking? His argument is that its not wood because "that would be ridiculous, space is interesting enough as it is". Sound logic, but nowhere near definitive proof.

Until we can view firsthand the data from the rovers or the various satellites that have orbited Mars, we are left trusting an organization that has various internal PR protocols regarding images and information released to the public.

My take? Its a rock that looks like wood...... But.... Thats just an opinion.

Peace

I'm not sure whether it's a plank of wood the size of a railroad tie or an outcrop of very symetrical rock. My more immediate question is ...."How many orbiters are currently circling Mars, and from what country or agency of origin?" The other threads about orbiters seem old and stale like 2006.So please don't delete this entry. I designed in the infancy stage some rovers and orbiters for Mars project 1987. The ones I'm aware of orbiting now at year end 2008 are Mars Global Surveyor,Mars 2001 Odyssey,Mars Express(ESA),Mars Recon orbiter MRO. Does anyone know of agencies or other countries which have current orbiters at Mars.I had a Frenchman tell me there were 11 orbiters at Mars currently and I asked him to tell me where to find out about them on the web or what countries or agencies were they from? He was evasive and said agencies but would not eloborate and I believe he was just hoaxing me. I wouldn't be surpised if there were secret military orbiters at Mars now,and even preceded official Nasa orbiters currently listed above. I doubt the 1960's US Nasa orbiters are still up there, and believe they would have hit Mars by now from decayed orbits,at least the ones which didn't miss the mark and just skimmed off Mars gravity well drifting for ages.vze2xjjk

Well... C'mon. Do you really think that it's just natural rock? I'm starting to think they're doing it on purpose. NASA deliberately shows hints of evidences for us like with the strange humanoid "rock" which was obviously a living, moving person. They test your brain and also test how far they can go in decieving the public. It seems they do a very very good job on it. The next time they'll show a flying saucer and a pine tree on Mars and say that it's natural phenomenon and some strange rocks and some people will still believe it. Whatever. Open your eyes and dare to believe your eyes! Don't let yourself be fooled by background illusionists.

I always thought (and have written it several times here on ATS) that that thing looks like one of those slab like rocks that are all over the place, that particular rock is just not as sunken in the ground as the other rocks and it has a different shape, but it looks like a rock to me.

And if NASA wants to change the images they can do it and nobody will notice, if I can do that NASA can do it also.

Also, the "grainy black and white" photos have a reason for that. If you would send a high resolution camera they would have to make the on board memory and the whole system bigger and with a bigger use of the available energy. Also, the bigger the sensor the more prone to errors, so keeping it small it has better chances of taking good photos without being affected by cosmic radiation or other things. And it makes more sense to use monochrome images in different wavelengths than one colour image, although it looks better it does not give the same amount of information.

Oh, I wasn't referring to you and didn't want to discredit you at all. I meant everybody who thought it was a rock. And this includes the avarage guy on the street who believes what he's being told on the evening news. So no offence

It matters not to the gullible. They will believe it is a piece of wood till thier little gullible brains cease to function. NASA is run by the illuminati...another statement with no proof to back it up. A once great civilization once existed there.....all was wiped out but one plank of wood....that piece of wood must one stong S.O.B. to survive whatever wiped everything else out...
. As you can see I think there is nothing to the illuminati and mars...and other crazy theories out there. I have chosen not to be a sheeple...by running around like a chicken with my head cut off...screaming to the world.....THE ILLUMINATI RUN EVERYTHING AND LIFE ONCE EXISTED ON MARS< THERE IS PROOF BUT THE GOVERNMENT IS COVERING IT UP. What a great excuse to have at your beck and call ...THE GOVERNMENT IS COVERING IT UP. Covers your a** when you are unable to prove anything.

Hey, I'm not saying absoluteley that what you see in the picture is a rock. I tend to believe the scientists (for which I may be gullible), but the truth is we will not know until we perfect our technology enough to get a really good photograph, and even then there's the (remote) possibility that it could be something we just don't recognize or understand yet.

This whole controversy reminds me of the time in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century when people believed there were canals on Mars. This was accepted as truth until more advanced telescopes showed there were not.

Canals on Mars

When we don't have all the information we can't really know for sure.

I was just wondering, since it has been mentioned by more than one poster so far, do any of you "pro-wood" folks have an explanation for why everything but this board would be there? Like say, whatever it was part of or attatched to or some other remnant of who used it or what for?

Ya its amazing that sending a hi-res camera that even when that rover was sent, could fit into your shirt pocket (look at the results of a 5mega pixel shot and its memory), that No Admittance Seems Alright would gladly tell anyone that its extremely difficult and expensive to get any hi-res images other than grainy black and white images from these multi million dollar rovers.

Save those excuses for the next Bozo convention.

Now just look at your hardware right in front of you that you are currently using. It would fit nicely onto any one of those rovers.

And no doubt your hardware can take very nice hi-res images.

So here we go again with Never Anything Seen Alright excuses and lame explanations.

Just keep in mind, that other nations are getting closer to sending probes of their own, and they wont follow the Never A Straight Answer theme of Nasty Anomaly Scene Airbrushers game.

Cheers!!!!
