Bush Aides Rush to Enact a Safety Rule Obama Opposes

www.nytimes.com

WASHINGTON — The Labor Department is racing to complete a new rule, strenuously opposed by President-elect Barack Obama, that would make it much harder for the government to regulate toxic substances and hazardous chemicals to which workers are exposed on the job.

The rule, which has strong support from business groups, says that in assessing the risk from a particular substance, federal agencies should gather and analyze “industry-by-industry evidence” of employees’ exposure to it during their working lives. The proposal would, in many cases, add a step to the lengthy process of developing standards to protect workers’ health.

Public health officials and labor unions said the rule would delay needed protections for workers, resulting in additional deaths and illnesses.

God forbid that they should put workers health and safety before profits...

... that would be positively un-American.

These last minute rule changes bush minor and his owners are pushing through all benefit them and the safety and health of not just workers but the interests of the people in general be damned.

While all of this is legal... at the same time its criminal... maybe not literally but definitely figuritively.

This happens all the time. The outgoing POTUS and his administration push through a bunch of junk that benefits them, and then the incoming POTUS just turns around and cancels most (or all) of it.

When Obama gets the boot in 4 or 8 years, he'll do the same thing.

My feelings exactly... the only people he cares for are... to quote him from the 2000 selection are "the have's and the have more" or as he also called them: "his constituency."

Republicans believe in deregulating everything. Forget the workers' lives and health, it's the ideology that matters.

Why not take the government out it completely? If you need a safety commission, make it a private one. The government should not be regulating this anyways.
