He blended criticism of Detroit's beleaguered Big Three automakers -- General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC -- with a pledge of support for government aid to help them survive. "We can't allow the auto industry to ... vanish," he said, although he added that a blank check for an industry resistant to change was not the solution to its long-term decline.

So the government has been very generous. 7.4 trillion dollar bill so far, new economic stimulus package and an automaker bailout. I think it is time to buy some Ford stock soon. Mine as well ride the wave.

So now we will have more years of the Big 3 churning out gas guzzlers or craptastic cars while they feed their union workers $75 an hour (benefits included) paychecks. Then after a few years they will probably ask for another bailout.

Are the Big 3 the next social program or something? Use tax payer money to support the unions and some of the most inept managers that walked the planet?

Maybe the Big 3 should file chapter 11 and stop sucking with their vehicle production and maybe, they will be great engines of the American economy

its kinda like this...

Once you go up you have to come down, we all know that.

It's the only solution to bring in real competition. But on a global scale the odds of a new American auto industry spawning from the failed roots of the Detroit's big 3 are slim to none.

so here are you're options.

The big 3 fall and foreign auto makers siphon off the auto market and own the monopoly forever putting American automakers out of the picture... and Detroit completely collapses due to loss of jobs and economic turmoil...

or the government buys the auto companies to save detroit and maintaine a foot hold in the GLOBAL auto industry.

Welcome to global trade!

As a resident of michigan, and knowing many many many many people in the auto industry, very very very few people actually make as much as you are claiming...

Besides, are we forgetting the other companies that work for the big 3? Denso Manufacturing is a big one around here too... they make the headlight assemblies for the automakers. They are NOT UAW... should they be SOL because a half a dozen people at the top made stupid decisions?

You're spewing nothing but talking points right now... You should really visit here, where 60,000 GM workers have already lost their jobs in the last decade or so... 60,000 is a lot of people...

Are the Big 3 the next social program or something? Use tax payer money to support the unions and some of the most inept managers that walked the planet?

Why blame the unions? are you suggesting that the manufacturing industry goes back to the awful conditions that existed before labor unions?

Why are we bailing out banks, which has gotten us nowhere, and refuse to bail out the auto industry... which employs 3 million people, not to mention the subsidiary companies that do contract work for the automakers...

Maybe the Big 3 should file chapter 11 and stop sucking with their vehicle production and maybe, they will be great engines of the American economy

If the Big 3 go under, do you honestly expect Toyota, Hyundai, Kia and all the foreign car companies to sit back, relax, and wait for the reorganization (chapter 11) to come to an end? nope... they'll suck up more of the market...

where do you suggest we employ these 3 million people... since the automakers won't be able to survive a chapter 11?

Just out of curiosity, you're a white collar worker aren't you. Or possibly you haven't felt the economy yet and are sitting comfortably, or perhaps you have already been hit hard, and have a chip on your shoulder about it...

Think about where to employ 3 million + people for the next decade...

When people in California have to pay for the well being of the Michigan economy, there is going to be some anger. We already pay for enough worthless programs around here. We have huge union problems and they are running the government bankrupt. They have massive political power, they get huge benefits especially in comparison with private sector jobs, and they complain of any proposed budget cut. The only thing the California government can dare to do is to raise taxes in order to solve problems (which really doesn't solve problems)

Do you think bailing out the Big 3 will help? It is just going to be like what happened to the banks. The Big 3 make crappy cars and run crappy business models. Their liabilities are far beyond that of Toyota and Honda (who btw employ AMERICAN workers) yet Big 3 cars still suck.

There is a very good reason why the Big 3 are going under while other car companies are still afloat.

I had an American car once and it had constant problems after 50k miles. I have a Honda now (made in Marysville) and it is going on problem free at 200k miles. If Honda gains more market share, they deserve it.

If the Big 3 wanted to get out of their jam, they could file chapter 11 and start producing all their worldwide models in the Michigan area. The Big 3, especially GM, have many many different models sold in many foreign countries but decide to make it in foreign plants. If they decided to produce their vehicles HERE, maybe the problem wouldn't be as bad for Michigan and maybe that would help with the overall trade deficit.

So what exactly is the bailout going to do anyways? Is there a drastic change in the automaker's business models? Is there going to be massive replacement of the management? Are the unions going to give up some of their goodies? Are the vehicles being made going to have some quality standards?

The question about the auto makers getting a bail out is if they will have to declare bankruptcy first to get management out of there and the government will then buy up the assets. What a nightmare.

The auto makers need a bailout because no one is buying their cars. We arent buying their product because gas is out of control (was anyways). The economy is going to crap because we people aren't spending. The people arent spending because we have to choose between gas and food.

Seems to me that there are 2 problems.

1. Oil is expensive which in turn makes gas expensive.

2. The people are the problem for not spending.

So we can do two things to jump start the economy and save the auto industry, all with one bail out.

1. Drill for our own oil where we know where it is. Oil will then become cheaper which will make gas cheaper.

2. Instead of a stimulous check of 600- 1200 dollars, distribute the 700B bail out money to all middle to lower class. I think some one figured that would be around 100,000 per individual. Now with that money everyone must buy a house and car (one that is US made) with enough left over to pad their bank accounts, if done properly.

Am I the only one this makes sense to? Give the people the money, they will buy things, the economy gets better and the auto industry will be ok.
