I think this one song by R.E.M-- "It's the end of the world as we know it" perfectly captures the last 8 years. Is this just a coincidence? I'd like for you to take a look at these lyrics and relate them to the events of the last 8 years.

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane -
Lenny Burnside is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn -
world serves its own needs, don't misserve your own needs. Feed it up a knock,
speed, grunt no, strength no. Ladder structure clatter with fear of height,
down height. Wire in a fire, represent the seven games in a government for
hire and a combat site. Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry with the furies
breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trump, tethered
crop. Look at that low plane! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population,
common group, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its
own needs, listen to your heart bleed. Tell me with the rapture and the
reverent in the right - right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright
light, feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign tower. Slash and burn,
return, listen to yourself churn. Lock him in uniform and book burning,
blood letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate. Light a candle,
light a motive. Step down, step down. Watch a heel crush, crush. Uh oh,
this means no fear - cavalier. Renegade and steer clear! A tournament,
a tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives
and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The other night I tripped a nice continental drift divide. Mount St. Edelite.
Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Breshnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs.
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You symbiotic, patriotic,
slam, but neck, right? Right.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine...fine...

Doesn't that kind of frighten you? This album was done by REM in 1987, way before the Lone Gunman episode of the X-files.

Perhaps there was just a global fear that 9-11 would happen and that its target would be the WTC. My thoughts are that everyone knew that it would happen but no one knew when-- that's why there are so many predictions about this hidden in the lyrics of songs and hidden in movies and shows.

What do you think? Do you really think it's just a coincidence?

he also predicted birds and snakes

i dont think he meant 'snakes on a plane' and 'caw'

i think 'dont get caught in foreign tower' in the whole song is grasping a bit

and i bet theres more then 1 hurricane that could will or has happened since the song was released

maybe europes 'final countdown' was a signal that it was comming and the start of the nwo began?

I can see what you mean. The second verse especially, seems like a description of being in the tower, and having to use the steps to escape.

People on the scene said in the debris there were many shoes, so the crushed hell part of the song seems very strange. I also think of the vehicles incinerated all over lower Manahattan by the dust cloud, and locking into uniforms, could be the first responders, who may have tried to use breathing apparati and such.

Very strange. This is one of my favorite songs because of the melody and refrain. I never looked at it this way before.

It's a good song and all, but I don't think it's really predicting anything. I think it's more about things that were already going on. It fits the future because of - status quo.

what status quo are predicting the future?

which track and which albums? and what did they predict?

money for nothing - the bail out ?

Well it's not like the things going on now are exactly unique, outside of who the players are.

I mustve dreamed a thousand dreams
Been haunted by a million screams
But I can hear the marching feet
Theyre moving into the street.

Now did you read the news today
They say the dangers gone away
But I can see the fires still alight
There burning into the night.

Theres too many men
Too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Cant you see
This is a land of confusion.

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands were given
Use them and lets start trying
To make it a place worth living in.

Ooh superman where are you now
When everythings gone wrong somehow
The men of steel, the men of power
Are losing control by the hour.

This is the time
This is the place
So we look for the future
But theres not much love to go round
Tell me why, this is a land of confusion.

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands were given
Use them and lets start trying
To make it a place worth living in.

I remember long ago -
Ooh when the sun was shining
Yes and the stars were bright
All through the night
And the sound of your laughter
As I held you tight
So long ago -

I wont be coming home tonight
My generation will put it right
Were not just making promises
That we know, well never keep.

Too many men
Theres too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Cant you see
This is a land of confusion.

Now this is the world we live in
And these are the hands were given
Use them and lets start trying
To make it a place worth fighting for.

This is the world we live in
And these are the names were given
Stand up and lets start showing
Just where our lives are going to.
