Mexican Navy finds coc aine-packed submarine

Colombian drug traffickers have been caught using a small submarine to smuggle 5.8 tons of coc aine to the United States.

Mexican navy Vice Admiral Jose Maria Ortegon said the 30-foot green submarine, which was captured on Wednesday, was equipped with global positioning system and a compass, and its crew had planned to drop off its shipment on Mexican shores.

Authorities arrested four Colombian crew members who claim to be fishermen forced by drug cartels to move the cargo. They say they left the Colombian port of Buenaventura about a week ago.

Similar makeshift submarines carrying drugs have been discovered off Colombia and Central America, but the navy says the seizure is a first for Mexico.

Apparently this is becoming a more and more common method of Colombian drug smugglers of getting coc aine and other substances into the United States without being detected. Air routes are difficult given the security at airports, transport by land is now much harder due to improved surveillance techniques and better border security so this seems to be the new way of smuggling drugs through the Caribbean and into the Gulf of Mexico.
