April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day, though not a holiday in its own right, is a notable day celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, enemies and neighbors, or sending them on fools' errands, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible.

The origins of this custom are complex and a matter of much debate. It is likely a relic of the once common festivities held on the vernal equinox, which began on the 25th of March, old New Year's Day, and ended on the 2nd of April.

Though the 1st of April appears to have been observed as a general festival in Great Britain in antiquity, it was apparently not until the beginning of the 18th century that the making of April-fools was a common custom. In Scotland the custom was known as "hunting the gowk," i.e. the cuckoo, and April-fools were "April-gowks," the cuckoo being a term of contempt, as it is in many countries.

One of the earliest connections of the day with fools is Chaucer's story the Nun's Priest's Tale (c.1400), which concerns two fools and takes place "thritty dayes and two" from the beginning of March, which is April 1. The significance of this is difficult to determine.

So, do you fool on April Fools Day? I used to, but not much anymore. I'm always pulling pranks and doing stuff like that to my wife and friends anyway, so every day is a "joke" day for me.

If.. erm... someone..*cough* was to place a thread containing outrageous, unverifiable claims in connecting with this topic.. How would they stand on 'not getting whacked with Skeptic's BANHAMMER'

I heard S.O banned about twenty people last April fool's day for trying that. Apparently he just isn't into people messing with ATS..

yeah... I understand the urge to do that, but probably not a good idea.

Even though there are a lot of members who would take it in stride and run with it, having a good time, others would cause drama, etc.

You're welcome to email Skeptic and as special permission though.

Methinks I'll just grab my tent and head off somewhere far away from anywhere with a net connection then.

I love pranks, just not when they are on me!
I was folding clothes and my mom told me there was a spider in the clothes basket!
I backed up and jumped over the couch faster than anything!
It was'nt very funny!

Last year my mom went to the club on Fool's day and my sister and I
decided to get tipsy, we put on Eagle hoodies and egged her as she stepped out her car, we even did the (Kah) bird noise thing!

Mu ha ha ha ha ha! April Fools day! I loved that one!

My son was supposed to be born April 1 but he was a week late. Dernit. But I usually post some sort of prank on April 1

The way to do it here is to post it in the jokes puns and pranks forum that way you don't get banned for doing it.

I forgot about April fools... A good internet April fools takes weeks to plan.

I have failed you all, I am sorry

Well, I will not pull any fool's jokes on ATS tomorrow, but I will be pulling a few on people where I live. I may even run around the high rise and tickle a couple of people who I know are not only ticklish, but love being tickled, too. Mad Tickler strikes again!

I am a goofy goober. I like the classics. Leaving a message for someone from Mr. Lyon or Mrs. Byrd and leaving the zoo telephone number. Or even more diabolical - leaving a fake name message with a live IRS number... so cruel. Not for the elderly or faint of heart, mind you.

I must admit, I don't know if I'm looking forward to or dreading April Fool's Day on ATS.

What is the origin of April Fool?

Watching the news this morning ( BBC ) they have had what appear to be two pranks so far, although I could be wrong. They are Greyhounds on ice and flying penguins, both sound fairly dumb, but I could be wrong, does anyone know of any April fools stories connected with the ATS subjects this year?

You mean this one..

Oh dear... That one is just terrible :shk:

Here's 10 stories that could be April Fools... but aren't

I like this one..

7. You will soon be able to have a tattoo on your teeth, reports the Sun. Steve Heward, the dentist who started the craze in the US plans to set up in Britain

This one should of been good a firm is planning to get a police officer turn up in the morning to investigate a murder, take people away for questioning, when they become worried they are let in on the joke, taken to a restaurant - then the management will do a runner leaving a huge bill!

Yes, That`s the one, although it was longer than the broadcast footage, it certainly looks more crazy watching the full version.

For this my second favorite day of the year I texted all my friends this morning and told them I was pregnant!. I am single right now, so that's part of the funny, the other part is that most of them know I had my tubes tied over a year ago. So many of them texted back, OMG WHO'S THE DADDY, then they realized what today is. For later I am going to use this website from where you can type in their phone number, and have a computer generated voice call them and say whatever you want it to say. I've done it to some coworkers already today. It's too funny. For the guys I have the computer say "stop touching yourself" for the girls I have it say "im watching you"
