The Ministry of Defence has said that a British soldier was killed today in Iraq. MoD also said that "no hostile action" was involved in the death.

Corporal Richard Thomas David Ivell, 29, a mechanic in the Engineers, died at the Shaibah Logistics base in Southern Iraq. Exactly what happened is not yet known. He leaves behind a wife and three children.

Corporal Ivell is the 59th British soldier to die in Iraq, and comes 11 days after the 58th died, Robert Thomson from West Lothian. He died of an engineering-related accident. Since the 1st of May, when the war was officially declared finished, 26 British soldiers have died, compared to the several hundreds of Americans.
