news.bbc.co.uk

A genetically modified "supermouse" which can run twice as far as a normal rodent has been created by scientists working in the US.

It also lives longer, and breeds later in life compared with its standard laboratory cousin.

Whether you're of the opinion that playing god is right or wrong, I see a disturbing element to this story.

Science fiction writers have long had ideas about the creation of genetically enhanced super soldiers who are stronger, faster and better able to withstand battle conditions - could it be that this research is part of the first stages of making enhanced humans a reality?

I realise that human applications of the science are probably a long way off, but as I said, could this be the first stages?
