Twelve Former US Army Captains: Reinstate Draft

infowars.net

"There is one way we might be able to succeed in Iraq," wrote the ex-captains, all of whom saw service in Iraq between 2003 and 2006.

"To continue an operation of this intensity and duration, we would have to abandon our volunteer military for compulsory service. Short of that, our best option is to leave Iraq immediately.

As the war in Iraq continues, along side Afghanistan, and the sights get narrower and narrower on Iran... how's the Government to support the "fight" but to offer yet another draft.

There have been talks of the draft for years now, and I don't honestly believe it would come to that... at least I hope not.

The draft will not return. As for the captains, none of them were old enough to be drafted. They'll have about 10 to 12 years of service. In reading the article, they seem to have an ax to grind about several things. One of which is in the modern military you have to make rank or you're out. Seems like these guys are newly unemployed.

The military we have now is no comparison to the 60-early 70's military. This is experience talking from several angles.

Just for a frame of reference- to make Captain usually takes 3 to 4 years time in service, or in other words, these aren't necessarily the most seasoned and experienced officers. Additionally, Captains have nothing to do with policy decisions. Now if you had 12 General Officers making a statement like this, it might be newsworthy.

Clearly.

You know, no proponents of the draft ever mention exactly how they plan on using a force made up of unwilling and unqualified soldiers.

This isn't the 60s. This isn't "grab a gun and head to the front". The weapons and tactics in use now require expertise. It is difficult to train people to that point when they don't want to be there.

Additionally, how effective is boot camp going to be in our litigation heavy society?

I have a whole list of other issues explaining to the T why a draft can not work. It appears that these gentlemen did not consider such things before making their publicity stunt.

You're in the news now boys... show us a real plan.

How do you think the US general public would respond to a draft?
Not too well I would guess.
And how would the military respond to the public being drafted?
In the UK the Generals usually say that our Military is now far more professional than it was during the days of conscription-due to the fact that the soldiers of today are there because that is the job they have chosen-rather than been forced into.

Now that is the opinion of knowledgeable military officers. That's why the only people who are usually pro-draft are gum flapping politicians. Why? Because they know nothing about modern warfare. Any officer worth his uniform knows exactly why drafts are bad in this day and age.

Oh and lemme tell you... you think Abu Ghraib was bad? Oh boy....

And that was done by Reservists. I'm a firm believer in the volunteer force with regards to professionlism and proficiency. Draftees will never reach the level of competence as someone that's been training for years.
