China to Relocate Four Million People from the Three Gorges Dam Area

news.bbc.co.uk

At least four million people are to be moved from the area around China's Three Gorges Dam amid warnings of an "environmental catastrophe".

The announcement by state media follows reports that the dam could cause landslides, soil erosion and pollution.

Critics have long warned the dam, the world's largest hydro-electric project, could cause huge environmental damage.

About 1.5 million people have already been relocated due to this dam. The total number may top six million by the time all is said and done. These numbers are mind-boggling. Apparently the effect of the reservoir behind the dam is causing more damage than initially anticipated, or at least publicly disclosed.

It's said that countless villages along the river will cease to exist.

Hey, djohnsto, Could the following be the huge-amonga problem over there? Kinda amazing to me that China can have such a seemingly Savoy and robust manufacturing epilogue and at the same time this:
___
"...Landslides, silting, and erosion above the dam are creating environmental and safety hazards that cannot be ignored, Wang Xiaofeng, director of the State Council Three Gorges Construction Committee, was quoted as saying. “We cannot exchange environmental destruction for short-term economic gain,” he said. ..."

Funny freckle of potential mega-disaster...

The dam will be good for China.

Every country needs more and more water; simply because every country is using more and more water. Also, it will hopefully protect some fish that are on their way to extinction in China.

Also their fishing industry could get a major boost from such an endevour. As to pollution, yes there is always pollution in such areas that humans have habitated. But the water has, and always will have a way of cleansing even the worst problems.

China's dam could last a long time, and do wonders for all of China. Hopefully they won't have troubles with earthquakes in the future; because that dam is definitely a top target for enemies using manmade earthquakes targeting that structure from hundreds and thousands of miles away. When the dam fills up, it will create earthquakes all on its own, because of the new displacement of weight from the water.

Even up close, the enemies of China will have no trouble messing up that dam with little trouble, and some time; its as simple as introducing Zebra mussels into their water. Zebra mussles multiply extremely fast, and could easily give the Chinese nightmares at the "Three Gorges Dam".

I have written the Duty/Tax/Anti-Dumping rules before that should have been or would normally been observed, when Importing Communist China goods.
Bottom line now? Don't buy'm. Pay more for US (or in CDA) goods and your/our Gov will have no say when (C) China starts whimpering, I feel.

If that dam breaks it will be proof positive that Bush hates Chinese people.

Hopefully the temporary housing these poor people are relocated to won't have lead paint.

It's not just village, it is whole towns, holy sites, ancient places of worship and temples.

Saw a documentary a few years back on the relocation of such a middle sized town. Among enviromentalists this has been a hot issue since the early 90s.

This is an issue that needs to be looked at more -- relocating that many people is a pretty big deal, it's like a major city having to relocate, here in the ol US . . . .
