I don't imagine many people actually celebrate today, but some of us do have the day off, so that is a reason to be happy!

All you old-worlders are out of course.

edit:

And Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians out there!

Sorry old-worlders, you're still out!

It's not a holiday or a "happy" columbus day unless you have the day off.
My kids have school, so it's just "columbus day" for us, skip the happy part

But, we do want to wish all the Canucks a Happy Thanksgiving Day!!!

I think it's a bit of a regional holiday. I think it's honored a lot more here in the Northeast than in the South because of the number of Italian-Americans here. I don't remember ever getting anytime off of school nor work when I lived in Florida either.

I doubt it. Pirates were not in the Carribean during his life. He was the first guy there.

Columbus got his sea legs at age 14 being a pirate himself. He did this around Greece and Iceland.

I have no idea why this is a holiday. Maybe because I'm just bitter that I am sitting in my office now, and everyone else has the day off. I think most Americans think of Columbus as a hero, but he was far from it.

1492 only really stupid people still thought the world was flat. Columbus's point of his trip was to establish new trade routes to China and India.

He never found the US, he found the Bahamas. In later trips he found other vacation spots, and South America.

He brought smallpox to the new world. However, the Indians fought back with
syphilis.

Some of his crew was criminals.

He also started a genocide that wiped out millions and millions of Indians. When he was not killing Indians he was taking their wives and land.

His first trip he brought 3 ships, only 2 returned. One sank.

So on this Columbus Day lets remember that I did not get the day off. And Columbus found a few of my winter cruise destinations spots. I have no idea why we honor him.

Because the "winners" write the history books...

...And he wasn't, by a looong shot, "the first guy there."

Just ask the Minoans, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, medieval Irish monks, The Knights Templar, and/or others who visited America before the first sure Viking voyages, the Muslims from Spain and West Africa, and, most importantly, the native peoples who WALKED over and were standing on the shores to warmly greet this "Christopher come lately," only to later rue the day...

“These people will make excellent servants,” wrote Columbus after the welcome of his first American voyage: he returned the next year with chains, attack-dogs and an army of plunderers...

Happy Columbus day?

Doesn't anyone realize what atrocities Columbus brought to South America and its inhabitants?

My school, myself, and many others do not celebrate Columbus day due to these.
