I remember a story that I heard a long time ago about one of the Popes being a Woman and dying in Childbirth. according to the story nobody in the Vatican knew the Pope's sex until She went in to labor.

Perhaps you're referring to Pope Joan, but from the books that I've read, she was a fictional character created to mock the church.
