That's a rumor that floats around every so often. Area 51 is still there and still open and operating.

As others have said, this is one of the oldest roumors on the net. Area 51 is alive and busy as ever. Let me bury this roumor by showing where it comes from.

Groom Lake is a Top Secret research facility. Growth in the use of spy sattelites has forced the government to stop daytime flight testing at the base. 1 hour before dawn, all outdoor testing at Groom Lake shuts down, and everything is moved inside of the windowless buildings that cover the base. Even the workers have to stay out of sight during daylight hours. The olny people allow to do anything outside at Groom Lake during the day is Base security and emergency personnel. The Complete lack of outdoor activity during the day makes the base APPEAR deserted!

In reality, Inside the building is as busy as any other military research center. About a hour after dark, the base personnel emerge from building under cover of darkness and Groom Lake sets up for it flight testing. Because of the secracy, everything is schedualed so all OUTDOOR activity ends before first light and everything disappears undercover again.
