Federal Research to (hopefully) become Open Access

www.wired.com

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) has pledged this year to resurrect the Federal Research Public Access Act (S.2695), which would require federally funded research to become publicly available online within six months of being published.

"When it's the taxpayers that are underwriting projects in the federal government, they deserve to access the very things they're paying for," said Cornyn spokesman Brian Walsh. "This research is funded by American taxpayers and conducted by researchers funded by public institutions. But it's not widely available."

I wonder what the specious arguments against this will be by those who hate Open anything? They'll probably pull the Terrorism and "Think of the Children" trump cards to make sure this never gets passed. Man, have I become that cynical?

Would this include US government black projects? I somehow doubt it given their very nature but wouldn't that be interesting.

I really doubt it since they don't exist

You mean doesn't exist as in DOES NOT EXIST? Or do you mean as in We cannot confirm or deny the existance of Area 51?

Black projects exist, the SR-71, F-117 & B-2 were all black projects
at one time.

Of course, we don't know exactly WHAT the current black projects are,
or what technology they may use.

As to the news.
I think this is a gret idea, and honestly I supose I always sort of
thought that the information was accessible to the public as it was.

Hopefully it will pass.
