WASHINGTON -- Flying research aircraft into the intense hurricanes of 2005 has given scientists new insight into how the massive storms suddenly gain and lose strength, according to a study out Thursday.
The new understanding could allow meteorologists to forecast accurately changes in the power of hurricanes just as they now can predict their directions, according to University of Washington atmospheric sciences professor Robert Houze.
