Police move in on collective

Right now there are riots and fires in different spots in Copenhagen, Denmark. This morning, an antiterror unit stormed a disputed house, "Ungdomshuset". They have removed those who lived there. Now the house's former residents and their many supporters are taking revenge. They are fighting in the streets with the police. There are now also many troublemakers/warriors on their way to Copenhagen to support their fight...

See if you can find any webcams and/or links in english. They have predicted this battle to be "very violent"...

The left-wing activists even offered to buy Ungdomshuset from Faderhuset at a very good price, but Faderhuset rejected and refuse to sell the house. They knew there would be trouble...

So these youths were squatters in the building and now other youths are rioting because they were evicted?

My favorite quote from the article:

According to eyewitnesses, police sprayed water and foam into the building before sweeping in.

Very clever, using the threat of soap and water to force teenagers to leave. No wonder it's causing riots..

They have prepared for this battle for a while. We all knew it was coming. There were also barbwire on the roof of the house. They say the action was performed with military precision.

But now it's going to get bloody...

I'd be interested in some background info, who are these kids? Is it a gang, or what...why aren't they home with their families, do they have families?

and, what were they doing that got the antiterror unit interested in them?

They also had a little fight on December 16, 2006. Here are some scenes from the action. It's not long ago.

At least 75 arrested in Copenhagen street clashes

"Now a lot of gangsters are rioting in the streets, building barriers, throwing bottles and so on," he said. "It is a bit confusing right now. We are trying to control the area and prevent new riots."

The conflict over the youth center has been simmering since 2000 when local government sold the building that houses the center to a religious group. Left-wing activist have been using the center as a base since 1982.

The current owners have a court order to have squatters evicted but the youths have sworn to protect the house and have repeatedly called for a political solution.

From Ungdomshuset's homepage. In english.

latest news

After trials in both the City Court and the National Court stating Ungdomshuset property of the Christian right-winged sect Faderhuset, we have been ordered out on December 14th 2006. The decision furthermore denies us possibility to take the case to the Supreme Court. Faderhuset refuses to sell the house.

Of course we are not going anywhere. We are going to defend our house.

Shops in Copenhagen are right now barricading themselves and are preparing for "war". The activists have announced to launch a "demo" at 5 pm (in about three hours from now). The police advices everyone to stay out of this part of the city. Tonight all hell will break loose.

Tak for det Hellmutt. Jeg er helt cuttet af her i Thailand, Politiken er banned af den siddende junta, ikke engang webcammet kan jeg se.

Here's a couple of more links (from Danish news source) in English.

As tensions rose, supporters began casting bottles, stones and refuse bins at police wagons.

In order to prevent the wagons from moving forward, a group of protestors placed a shipping container across Nørrebrogade, a main artery leading into the city.

Area churches have reportedly opened their doors to area residents seeking refuge from the conflict.

Well this isinteresting. I flagged this thread quickly!

I guess that this basically destroys the idea that 'only crazy muslims riot' when pressured. Since these people are undoubtedly baptised in christian churches, should we be investigating the branches of their Churches in the US, afterall, they're apparently dangerous yahoos.

Helmutt
While supporters are coming in from all over Europe

Interesting. So they're part of an international network that can be activated rather quickly, and stoke the flames of violence eh?

I'm a little confused, what right to the rioters claim to have to the buildings?
And what is their justification for violence here?

Latest from Copenhagen. The activists have taken another house. Right now there are at least 20 police busses heading there, with a police force in riot gear and they are according to the report all wearing gas masks.

The occupied house was raided by police, but it turned out that the activists had left the building.

Less than 10 minutes ago it was reported that a large group of activists had entered Christiania. The police has surrounded Christiania and are now shooting a lot of teargas into the area.

Are the people in this area armed with firearms? If so, this could degenerate real fast..

Anyway, good for those people, at one point you have to keep your ground, and this is another moment they choose to. What will be the moment when americans keep their ground? When it s full martial law or before?

I don't know, but after the police raided Ungdomshuset they did find some flamethrowers there...

I'm adding an article from BakuTODAY.net here:

BakuTODAY.net: Danish police clash with radical squatters

01/03/2007

The four-storey Ungdomshuset has been a haven for rebels, punk and squatters since the 1980s, when it was given to them by the city of Copenhagen.

But it was recently sold to a fundamental Christian sect, which has demanded the eviction of the youths. The sect plans to tear the building down.

[---]

Some of the parents of the youths had in recent weeks stood guard outside the building day and night to protect their children against a possible police offensive.

[---]

Eric, a 60-something anthropologist, said he "feared the worst, because a lot of people are angry about the police aggression."
