I just recently made a deal with a guy I know who runs a custom bodyshop/audio/paint, etc. here nearby. I have 2 cars, a 1971 olds cutlass s coupe, all original #'s matching, and my "unknown", 1980 cutlass calais t-top.

I was recently building a new motor for my t-top, a bored 30-over 350 olds, with everything new--pistons, heads modified to big block specs, headers, etc. The only parts original on this 350 are the rods and crank, and those have recieved attention too.

The deal:

I traded my 80 t-top (was gonna sell it anyway), unfinished, all parts, in return for all bodywork/primer and custom candy paint on my 71. My 71 is an arizona car, so it is rather rust free (I live in MI.). There are some panels that need to be patched, not too bad. It worked out as a great deal for both of us.

The questions--???

How rare are the t-tops? I have heard that there are less than 1,500 of them in existance..is this true?

I have only been able to find pictures of one other t-top after hours/days of research, and it is of an 81. No other year models I have ever seen have this option.

Is there anyone out there who is an Oldsmobile freak?

If so, i'd love to hear some background on the car, and how many might be left.

(keep in mind that I am still trading it.)

Sure do miss the old cutlass's. Not sure about the 1500 with T-tops, though it was a factory option. Seems like it was mostly powered by a Chevy 305 motor.

On the 71 model, look to see if its an SX or not. If its an SX, you have something special.

Heres some data that may help you decide.

no, the 71 is just a standard production s coupe. not a 442, or a supreme. It is still in more than excellent mechanical condition though. It's got 100k miles, and it runs as well as my new colorado.

It's the 80 I'm curious about.

it came with a 261 v-8 with a 2bbl. I researched the vin already. hehe
