Former Australia manager Terry Venables is still expected to return Down Under as a coach in the Australian Premier League.
In July it was reported that the former Barcelona, Tottenham, Leeds and England boss had agreed to become head coach of Newcastle United in the new national soccer competition and would also oversee recruitment and technical development.
Con Constantine, the owner of the New South Wales club, has revealed he closely monitored the situation at St James' Park after Venables had talks with Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd following the sacking of Sir Bobby Robson.
Constantine, however, insists he would have expected Venables to have taken up the position in Australia regardless of the outcome with the Magpies, prior to Graeme Souness being offered the job.
