Ubiquitous... I don't think anyone is saying that they want war or in this case "nuclear fallout", however, the topic of this thread is "Nuclear Fallout Survival" so please keep comments on topic.

I'm with you on the whole "I wish there was no war" sentiment. I'm sure most of us are, let's just please try to stay on the topic that's up for discussion here.

Thanks for understanding

Paranoid Americans !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This totally amazes me ? Are you serious ?
Are you really serious about a nuclear attack on the US ? So serious that you are hunting down fallout shelters from a source that is 16 years old ??
I'm sorry but I don't think it's worth the effort.

I think people should know what to do if it happens. You can't say 100% it will never happen.

Hey, I'm a canuck and I'm preparing. It's all about being ready, just in case. Oh, don't worry. Even if you DID prepare, most of Ol' Blightey would end up decorating the upper atmosphere anyways.

Cheers!

Yes, there are people saying that they want war; they are asking for advice on how to prepare for nuclear fallout and not trying to stop it. Conclusion: they want and believe in war.

You're welcome. I just want to add that the comments were perfectly on topic. 'SURVIVAL for/of Nuclear Fallout(war)'. I understand. Yes, and my addition was deeper than what most take at face value. It was to open their realities and conscioussnesses to cease the focus of nuclear fallout altogether, spread some love, hug your neighbor, and have a smile. If it is not illegal to love, if love cannot stop wars, and if concentrating on love instead of preperation for utter destruction is not an arrangement and a valid idea to survival of nuclear war, hate, and the destruction of Earth then it is transparently ostensible that mankind is doomed and blinded inside of their own limited veracity.

In the preperation of nuclear fallout we should go a step further and not even allow the circumstances to arise. Accepted reality is what is creating this, it is not beyond our control. We are a collective whole of peoples and a collective whole of consciousness.

I will not allow my world's consciousness to be wrapped in a veil of fear and spotlight on the manifestation of negative realities. I fight for love, I fight for the freedom of mankind, I fight for peace, peace is my fight. Piece of mind is found within the mind of peace. May you have a great day and may we not have any more misunderstandings
. I will continue to keep my posts on topic from my dimension of reality which is my freedom to possess and mold. Thank you.

I'm proud to know that you are peace loving =) Good, we have something in common and we can talk this out in a kind manner.
Should we take this to u2u? I don't understand where I molded my post in "disrespect" to the topic and if I didn't why am I being alerted to the molding of posts into a form which 'respects' the topic? (except for now of course, it's going a bit off topic). Can you point me in the direction of my disrespect? My dimension of reality, whether weapons or not, is one of infinites and eternals, love and peace. My comments still in no way disrespected the topic nor any members or staff and aptly apply to the thread's title. I would appreciate it if the problem would please be specifically pointed out so that I am not continuously confused as to what you guys are talking about. Thank you, kindly.

Which is totally off topic from the discussion, "Survivalist: Nuclear Fallout Survival."

I can relate to where you are coming from, I too would love to enlighten the world and make it a happy shiny place. There is a time and place to do that though, and in the middle of a serious discussion titled, "Survivalist: Nuclear Fallout Survival" well, that is not the time.

Have you visited the spirituality forums yet? They will love you there. I think you should try them out.

If you keep derailing the discussions in the other forums, I see the darkness growing and terrible forebodings.....

Love and light my brother,

Love and light my brother,

I was being very 'serious' in my posts. I understand it is Survival: Nuclear Fallout Survival. My survival plan was to not let it occur in the first place. Why does that mean I have to go trudge over to the spirituality forums? Intelligent love is only for 'spirituality'? You're a peaceful staff right? Darkness and terrible forebodings? Can someone please tell me what I did/said wrong already. I'm growing apprehensive... I feel as if I am going to be banned without proper explanation. I think you should begin enlightening the world and making it a happy, shiny place then.
Yay.
I'm glad it's within you. Let me see that side of you!

Gosh, I don't wanna pick a fight... but "If you keep derailing the discussions in the other forums, I see the darkness growing and terrible forebodings.....
Love and light my brother," What have I derailed? Doesn't this type of talk belong in spirituality? Are you now threatening me? What have I done wrong? This is definitely not looking good. I'm just being a good ol' law abiding ATS citizen... but I am certainly going to question authority when it is asking for respect and not giving it at the same time. See what's been done? It didn't even have to come to this. I didn't do anything wrong in the first place. Only stated my opinion to survive nuclear fallout. It wasn't liked... now I see a ban upcoming... but I definitely won't roll over and die until I receive an explanation on what I've done wrong.

Again... this quote "It was to open their realities and conscioussnesses to cease the focus of nuclear fallout altogether, spread some love, hug your neighbor, and have a smile. " Was only in response to what another staff member had sucked out of me in my attempt to explain to him where I was coming from, otherwise it wouldn't even be on the board.

No one has threatened to ban you, All that has been asked is that you remain on topic. No one here asked that you open their conciousness (sp) or guide them to a higher path. It's rather pompous of you to assume you can do that.

We are just trying to have a conversation and now the conversation is totally about you. Congratulations, the thread has been totally hijacked.

Stop this now!

The thread topic is, "Survivalist: Nuclear Fallout Survival."

Please remain on topic.

Again. I want to be shown what I have done wrong. I made one statement and went on my merry way only to come back and see that Staff Members were telling me stay on topic. It is not Because of me. It is because of you guys. The person who posted this thread asked that I open his consciousness. He/her asked for an answer on how to survive nuclear fallout. I gave my conclusion. Now I'm pompous and assuming? I am being extremely kind and respectful to all of you. Please stop the name calling and the accusations.

Anyway, back on topic. To survive nuclear fallout don't let it occur in the first place. Focus positively, love everyone around you and make friends with your neighbors. (unlike the United States leaders) Just be friends with North Korea, forget about their nuclear weapons, stop denying them, and then in the future we can deal with our weapons after we have all made peace with one another and THEN we WILL stop fighting. Before peace must come love. Peace is not acheived through war. So, to survive nuclear fallout is to not let it occur. Enjoy... very simple. Someone inform the president before we get into another war!

Deepest respect to ATS and this one lovely Earth and this one lovely race.

For those whom believe that only lovers of war and nukes will get war and nukes, I heartily invite you to read this history of military nuclear accidents. Situation X is not limited to war, your town might just happen to get hit by a weapon that was being transported to some completely unrelated place.

That in mind, a few questions I have for the OP and anyone else that may know.

In terms of a Nuke/Bio/Chem Situation X (which I'm sure almost all of us hope to god never happens), I have woefully little education. I am curious about the following:

  • Anti-Radiation Pills - Do they work? What brand? What dose? For how long? Are they pre-emptive or symptom-based?

  • I have read that you do not want to wear any metal that has been within the radiation wave area, especially denser metals such as gold, as they become radioactive much more quickly. Is this true?

  • Are there any animals that are recommended "detectors" for particular nuke/bio/chem situations (such as the song-birds that coal-miners used to use)? I realize this question might raise the ire of our animal lovers. Rest assured I'm not calling for a round of test subjects to be created, but it would be nice to know what options exist, and detector does not neccessarily = killed by. Dogs, for instance, are pretty darn good at smelling things and anticipating Earthquakes.

  • Is the idea of a bomb shelter in the back yard truly worth something, or was it just some WWII propaganda to make people feel better? Any cases of these bomb shelters proving effective, and if so, against what forms of attack?

  • Is there any advice from our ex-military out there as to what us civvies can do in the event of NBC attacks as far as breathable air goes? Especially if we don't own an independent air supply or a really good gas mask?

Thanks in advance for the answers. Please, survivalists, keep these threads active, on target, and spreading. The more we can prepare, the better.

Answers to some of the questions:
How to scruff off contaminatied material?
Shower will most likely work best, if they still function. In field conditions we were taught to use fir branches to wipe ourselves clean (we would wear NBC / rain suits or capes in case of any NBC alert. Funny thing about the capes is that they are supposed to hold off NBC material, but they just won't protect you from normal rain
    )

Anti-Radiation Pills - Do they work?
Iodide pills work, since they prevent readioactive iodide from depositing to your body, must be taken before the contamination

Is the idea of a bomb shelter in the back yard truly worth something, or was it just some WWII propaganda to make people feel better?
They work, we were taught to hide in foxholes covered with plastic, wait until the blast and cloud go over, get up, brush the immidiate surroundings and continue fighting... And backyardshelters saved 1000s of people in Finland during WW2

Is there any advice from our ex-military out there as to what us civvies can do in the event of NBC attacks as far as breathable air goes?
Good gas mask will protect you for the first 12-24hrs and after that air outside the actual blast zone should be breathable (spare filter will incease the time mask works)

Potassium Iodide pills on the way...enough for myself and my kiddo for 3 months.

It's not terribly expensive, they last a long time, and it's one of those "come in handy" kind of items personally. Like extra socks...what's the harm in being prepared I ask?

As for masks...the price does get a bit hefty (here in Canada anyway)...but you're right that having a couple of extra filters is a good idea.

I really must emphasize to readers that there's no harm in being prepared. Just because you're prepared for "it" doesn't mean "it" will happen with any certainty.

My kid thinks it's a bit "nuts"...but really...if it doesn't cost much, can be stored with no difficulty and will be ready IF it's ever needed...why the big deal?

In the event it becomes apparent that a nuclear strike is a distinct possibility you start taking the pills. Simple as that. Most come with extensive directions for use, and you can also find a ton of info on the net or from your family doctor...it's a widely used medication to treat thyroid disorders.

As for a fallout shelter...that's a tough one. A lot of things and circumstance to consider...

I think having KI and masks, and being aware of general food safety and contamination issues is of great help.

Water purification tabs too...(which I already have as we're in EQ & Tsunami zone here)

OKay peeps, this is intended as a heads up from an ex NBC Instructor.

Do not, repeat, do not purchase gas masks, respirator systems or filters from off the shelf sources.

Never, repeat, never purchase second hand gask masks, respirator systems or filters from Militaria outlets.

The same goes for NBC Suits or Capes or any type of protective clothing.

    WHY? I hear you scream.

Because all the above mentioned items have specific shelf lives, usually 5 years for gas masks and respirator systems and 10 years for filters.

This is usually the manufacturers stated shelf life, after which time, neoprene begins to perish and the agent [charcoal and fullers earth] in respirator filters begins to break down, as does the cotton fibre.

The best gas masks, respirator systems and filters are made specifically for the armed forces in your country and the manufacturers may not sell direct to the public. HINT: Try obtaining a list of manufacturers from defence sources, form a limited liability company, and buy direct from a reputable supplier.

For example, the best NBC Individual protection Equipment [NBC IPE] here in the Uk is manufactured by Avon Rubber [who used to be in Whiltshire] They do not sell direct to the public.

Their new respirator, the S12, the new NBC Suit the No 1 Mk 6B, with Inner/Outer Gloves and Overboots, will cost you anything up to £2000.

That is just the initial outlay. Ideally, you should have 3 suits, 2 respirators with 2 spare cannisters and 3 pairs of Inner/Outer Gloves and 2 pairs of Overboots per person, if you are serious about protecting yourself and your family.

Total cost for a family of 4 = £8,000. That is just for bog standard fitting.

You need a correctly fitted gask mask or respirator system. If it does not fit properly, you'll die in an NBC environment.

Avon Rubber produce the S12 in Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large sizes, whilst their NBC Suits are measured by Height/Chest size for Smocks and Waist, Seat and Inside Leg for Trousers.

They also produce an all-in-one NBC Suit made from NBC resistent GoreTex, but don't even go there, as there are not even enbough ready for the UK Armed Forces Mobilization Stores and will not be sold to civilians. [It's secret, you see!]

With regards to cannisters for gas masks, they should be in a sealed aluminium foil package or bag and, clearly marked with the chemical agents they have been tested against!

All UK NBC IPE is clearly marked on the package with Lot Number, Year of Manufacture and Year of Packing.

I was recently given an NBC IPE package for comments by my Osteo. He had purchased it locally for £150. It comprised an old S6 respirator, 2 x S6 cannisters and, would you believe it, a polythene sheet with a hole for the head to poke through.

Amazing value and I told him to put it in his dustbin.

Be warned! Even in this day and age, there are people out and about who will rip you off because they are feeding on the current terrorist activity to make a quick buck!
