Why do you think that it is a surprise? Master Chief is just a genetically engineered elite soldier, so there is plenty of them.

There was plenty of them leading up to halo 1, but during reach most of them died.

I think Master chief is one of ,if not, they last known spartan left.

So Halo Wars will probably show the spartans fall

by the way... halo wars is a real time strategy game not a first person shooter.. just to let u guys know if u didnt know, and sorry to let down anyone who thought it was going to be a fps. but halo 3 cometh... and so does the box so i can send my freakin 360 back to Microcrap to fix cause it broke .. again!

It looks amazing and it was believed that all of the spartans except for 117 were lost at reach but they were found on a planet in the third book. Anywho..looks amazing
