.AVI file compressing

How can I compress .avi video files so that i can fit more on a dvd+rw disc? The disc is 4.7GB and the files are about 42 minutes long

I assume that you run a flavour of Windows... The Xvid codec is superior for compressing high quality stuff. You can use it together with Virtualdub.

Problem solved, I dont have to put them in a DVD format I just need to copy them to a DVD disc. Then when I put the disc in my player, the files come up on the players menu and I select which one I want. Found this out by accident and the videos are excellent quality too! Thanks anyway guys!
