I "just" discovered this "anomaly" on the Mt. St. Helen's webcam pic, while doing one of my daily check in's with the volcano.

Can anyone else tell me what this "blur" is? It wasn't in the screen shot before this, not sure if it will be in the next image.

Doesn't look like a bug to me and seems to be over if not beyond the peak of the Helen

the image is still current at the moment here:

The image has been refreshed and the gray streak is still there, along now with some kind of aircraft making a contrail over head.

what could cause this streak to remain the same over 5-10 minutes, it doesn't look like it's on the camera but I could be wrong?

Leaf or stick on the lens?

Seems to be the same thing in the series, its not moving or anything.

Rods can be ruled out, since, well, it doesn't look anything like one (and they don't exist anways, natch)

don't think it's a rod (bug) either, but I can't see how it can be something on the camera, the perspective is throwing me off, but it looks as if it is over, if not behind the peak....notice the second pic, how the smoke from Helen seems to obscure the bottom of the streak???

Twenty minutes later and it's still there. Now I have to rule out a smoke plume from Helen herself. Still not convinced on the leaf, twig, camera strap prospects either...

guess I'll have to keep using this
for the rest of this thread

I'm guessing too, but, could it be the tip of a windblown icicle in front of the camera housing? I've seen icicles form leaning like that after a steady wind.

At 12:16 it was there too and it looks like St.Helens has gone ballistic. I think she cracked the lens.

Seems blurry when compared to the mountain. This would tell me that the object is very close to the camera which is set to focus on the mountain and not close up.

I say a lens smudge or something. Maybe bird poopy.

bird poopy eh?

thanks for the opinions everyone and the explanations

It looks like a pine needle on/near the lense.

If you look at the area I've circled in red, you can see that whatever it is, extends in front of the mountain.

Good eye, tebyen...you're right, it does extend down in front of the mountain.
If it was bird poopy, then that bird was diarrhetic

I'm still sticking with my skinny icicle...maybe, as the sun goes down, we'll get a better idea of what it really is.

I don't get it, in every frame it's faded a bit more.

Aye, could be an icicle as well.

Is it cold enough in that area for them though?

It'll be interesting to see if it comes into clearer focus tomorrow when the area isn't covered in shadow again.
