Israel to buy German Subs

Israel has ordered two German submarines to counter long-range threats such as Iran, which it fears is seeking atomic weapons.


Israeli security sources said on Monday that Tel Aviv had signed the deal to buy the new Dolphin-class submarines at a discounted price of some $325 million each after Berlin agreed to accept payment over 10 years.

They said despite deep cuts foreseen for Israel's defence budget, military chiefs decided that the submarines were needed to counter long-range threats.

what other long range threats does israel have.... or are they going to continue to obtain offensive weapons platforms constantly citing Iran as a reason????

It's a bit odd for Israel would do this. Tel Aviv/Haifa and the Negev complex are shallow-water ports with very limited access.

It won't take much for arab states to monitor their docking-loading routine.



No. I suspect their real interest will be in RE-SELLING them on the black interarms market to the highest bidder.

Maybe the Chinese, or Singapore?

North Korea has several deepwater ports, I think.

Maybe you guys every thought about geography of Israel and wonder why they want subs in the first place. Its pretty small country. Small enough that you could wipe out Israel with all its nuclear arsenal in one strike. Hmmm I wonder.....

DB is right, Isreal is about the size of LA County.....one hit in the right place could cripple the required responce.

I would like to commend the German governent for selling these fine sub's to Isreal. Surely this sub can also fire cruise-missiles...perhaps it will play a part in the upcoming strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Small enought to fit in Lake Michigan as we can see on the map. No doubt we know why Israel wants subs in the first place. Its like the second arm or second layer of its nuke deterrence.
