The British national weather service announced on Friday that this year 2005 will be either the second or third hottest year on record, the end result depending on how Siberia reacts weatherwise between now and the new year. The hottest year on record at the moment is 1998 and general consensus is that 2005 will be second on the list. The results are in line with global climate change research and concerns are building among people in the polar and low lying areas

The Met Office bases its measurements on both land and sea temperatures.

The trend adds weight to concern among many scientists that the world is hotting up and that human activity including burning of fossil fuels and generation of "greenhouse gases" by industry is playing a major part.

Meanwhile, in Europe Portugal and Spain have experienced their worst droughts ever recorded, and further east, floods and torrential rain drenched Switzerland, Germany, Austria and EU membership-candidates Bulgaria and Romania.

"The vast majority of scientists would now say that there is a significant, substantial human effect on the environment," Craig Hutton, project manager at the GeoData Institute, University of Southampton, said on Friday.

Interesting for global warming debunkers is the fact that this data has been recorded since 1861 and the top five hottest years are 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2001. so it means that it is in fact getting hotter.

These events are not good for the future of mankind on this planet. Climate change is occuring, disease is breaking out, war and fighting reigns supreme.

Sounds more like the insruments are getting better and that there is ALOT more data to be used to compile the results. Besides, 120 or so years of recorded data do not convince me that there could have been years of drought in the millions of years prior to our existence. I wouldn't worry about burning up in the sun or seeing an ice age in our lifetime.

Back in February it was reported that 2005 is To Be The Hottest Year To Date.

It looks like they were not far off in their predictions.

Is this what's called idle talk? So we just idly sit by while we see our future burn or freeze up with all this data in our face.
In the millions of years prior to our existence species have went extinct just because of climate change.

So is it with all this information we have, we twiddle our thumbs to make passive comments of a possible future end of existence for ..eh...uh.. doh..uhm ...

I hate news sources that flush their credibility down the crapper...

I hate it when the world hots up...

This looks like more environmental activist garbage.

Besides, noone is denying things are getting warmer. What is debated is the cause of the warming. The puss-erm-hippies say it's the eeeeevil corporations and their noxious fumes. But... what about... the cows? Maybe if they'd put down their salads and eat a few moo-cows, there'd be fewer methane pumping cattle rumps!? Maybe!?!

Tell that to my electricity provider. They made a pile off of me this year due to AC. It WAS the hottest summer that I remembered since I went to L.A. in June back in '78.

Like I said, noone is denying that the climate is in a warming trend. But no reputable scientist or educated environmentalist is going to say "It is all because of SUV's and Mexican Industry!!" ...

Society needs to work the way it does. There isn't going to be a massive industrial change over night, but I don't think this is anything todo with us (humans) causing problems.

In my opinion and many others. It is a natural cycle in Earths climate. At worst the sun could be acting strange in recent years, I've heard a few odd reports of the sun causing problems especially amongst amateur radio folk. To me its a natural change in the Earth, the Earth has had an Ice age before, why can't we get the reverse? Which I believe also may of happened many hundreads of thousands of years ago.

Seems out of our control, my recommendation: buy stocks in air conditioning companies

I used to pooh pooh global warming. But since I've learned what our government is doing and also considered what the space program is doing to the atmosphere, I'm angry. This earth is not a toy to play with. Shooting electromagnetic waves, just pouring them into the ionisphere continuously, bulging the ionisphere, experimenting with it, manipulating it -- it is an outrage. Read about HAARP and the GWEN towers. No wonder we have holes in the ozone! It's not from mowing our lawns, using spray deodorants or driving our cars. It's because our government is messing with the atmosphere big time. This is what needs to stop. We don't need space shuttles and voyages to the moon and all that nonsense. We also don't need the cloud seeding and the chemtrails. You want to talk about pollution and destruction of the planet, look to the government. And they are snatching up all the land. Once they own it they just let it rot. They won't allow anyone to thin the forests or even remove trees after a forest fire, trees that are dead and have nice cured wood and could make beautiful lumber.

All this Greenpeace and Sierra stuff is a pile of dung. People need to wake up and realize who's really doing the harm to this Planet. While we are saving all our cereal boxes and plastic soap bottles and newspapers, the government is desroying the atmosphere in a way that will end up killing almost everyone living on the Planet. Read Revelation. All this stuff is because of the government. It is. Really.

^^ amen

they are doing experiments that we have no idea what side-effects will occur from the in the short/long-term. the govt. works in so much secrecy and keeps us (the so called government) out of the loop until it's too late and we have nothing but pure speculation to go on because they don't release any fact. they down right lie whenever caught in the act and never makes it into headline news.

we are the cows, out in the pasture getting nice and fat, filled with ignorance.

it's pretty absurd to me how people can say 'it's because we have more technology to measure the temp.' if in 1890 the average temp in nyc was(for example) 65, and in 1985 it's been on a steady incline, it's pretty plain to see(at least to me) that the globe is 'warming'. now the next thing is what can we do to level the warming trend or at least make the rate of increase decline. something our president absolutely doesn't care about (most politicians for that matter) so we need to keep bringing these points to the public conscious so people could at least know what's going on.

Oh boy...

Ok...

Number One: You and I... WE... are The Government.

Number Two: if you want to ramble on some radical uneducated jibberish, atleast know who you're referring to. Throwing the wonderful generic label of "the evil government" basically just says you don't know what you're talking about. Lets try... "The Air Force is doing experiments on us." or "NASA is causing the ozone hole." or some other nonsense. "Read up on..." < grep -v "SCIENCE"
