WASHINGTON - The United States has obtained a letter from one terrorist leader to another that discusses plans to force a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, create an Islamic state there and then spread their fight into neighboring countries, Pentagon officials said.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman would only broadly characterize the intercepted letter, which he said was written by Osama bin Laden deputy Ayman al-Zawahri to the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Whitman indicated that the letter was written in July, but he would not say where, when or how it was obtained, or who intercepted it. He said the Pentagon is confident it is authentic but has not yet decided whether to release it publicly.

it may be true since we have heard of Osama taking on the Saudi family who now rules Saudi Arabia, as well as attempted assasination of Jordan's leader, and attacks in Kuwait, Turkey, etc. this would prove Osama and Al Qaida along with associates like Zarqawi hopes to see the new empire wen trying to force the coalition to withdraw. no wonder wen i heard of Bush mentioning about Islamic terrorists wanted to establish an empire.

Hmmm...
Bush's poll rating drops to new lows,
his reputation over NO is tarnished
people are wanting to pull out of Iraq, growing oppositon and outrage
Mutterings of impeachment over Roves actions

So he returns to the same old warhorse and digs up / manufactures a letter supporting him.

Of course the letter might be true, but its certianly being spun hard. Afterall the got it in July, almost 3 months ago...

Yeah! Those pesky Ayrabs wanna take over the Middle East and steal all that oil that belongs to us. They should be rounded up and deported as a threat to National Security and American interests in the region

true but remember that the letter may be useless since then wen the letter did not help lead the U.S. back to Osama so they might as well bring it out for to support the Iraq war. after all if u intercept the letter u try to solve the puzzle by following back the trail to i hope was Osama's haven. but guess they couldnt follow the trail.

Check this ... I don't know how real this is but its interesting when seen in context..

From here

However, it is being reported from well-informed sources throughout Washington that
1) target letters have been sent to Karl Rove, Scooter Libby, and Ari Fleischer;
2) Rove has agreed to testify and possibly agree to a plea bargain agreement in return for his testimony against other targets of the criminal probe;
3) Cheney and Bush may be named as unindicted co-conspirators;
4) Bush's "war speech" before the National Endowment for Democracy and a late Thursday afternoon report that "19 operatives" have arrived in New York City to place bombs on subway trains are blatant attempts by the White House to divert attention from the impending indictments against the Bush White House.

Is this just another attempt to divert attention from dosmesitc politics?

NEW YORK - Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his police chief insisted Friday they did the right thing by going public with a terrorist threat to bomb the New York subway, brushing aside suggestions from Washington that they overreacted to information of dubious credibility.

was it the White House or was it Mayor Bloomberg who decided to raise the alarm. not sure if this was to divert attention. FBI and Homeland security criticized Bloomberg for starting it all in the first place.

what is this? any accusation against muslims are racist to you all? why is the thought of extremists desiring a goal to reclaim an islamic empire so outlandish or impossible to you? do you actually not see the difference between insurgecy and extremist activity? how many need to die at the hands of extremist muslims before people realise their activivity has nothing to do with muslim oppression or any such "noble" resistence? they are playing both sides across the globe like jimmy hendrix played the guitar.

"oh youre a bigot" "well youre a weak liberal" "bla, bla, etcetera, etcetera"

its such a good strategy none of you consider they might be way away from what either of you think is their reasoning, its not resistence and its not to destroy america, its about empire.

Netchicken, the letter was written July 3rd, but the US just recently acquired it. And I think in the same raid as the one that produced this letter they also found some information pertaining to an attack on the NYC subway system.

Boy, what timing!

I'm not buying it. I think it's just something contrived to garner more support for Bush's half-baked crusade.

Amethyst of course you're not buying it, anything that doesn't support your view of the big bad evil US government must be untrue.

Westpoint, what exactly has the US Gvt DONE or provided to prove everything they are undertaking is for the good of mankind?
They havent offerend any hard factual proof ABOUT anything..

So how can we beleive anything that comes out now, after soo many lies?

Its becoming a joke.. They dont even care if the public buys it now..

It doesnt matter the approval ratings are so low... or that the public has growing outrage at the deceiving tactics this US gvt has used.. because in the end they can put what ever information out they want, and it doesnt matter how many people think its horse crap.. because ultimately there in charge, and we are mearly peasants.
And you only need to look at what stories get airtime on news networks, or how Anti War protesters are treated to see that....

As long as those rich men sitting around bush's oval office keep looking at that big green 100$ bill in there wallet... we're never going to get the truth.

It was Bloomberg who raised the alarm, and he makes no bones about it nor does he apologize for it. He said that as mayor, he is responsible for the people of NYC. I agree with him.

Even Bush said that the Feds pass on the intel to the states, who make the final decisons.

We've been hand fed intell from the Bush Administration for two long and it all seems to fall under his ratings. If ratings are bad, he's thwarted 10 terrorists attacks on U.S. soil, if they are good, he takes another vacation.

WestPoint23 I find your signature ironic in the extreme.

Bush wants an American empire. We isolationists/constitutionalists simply want America a republic--the way it should be.

Of course I don't trust the government. Our Founding Fathers didn't either--hence the Constitution. Of the people, by the people, for the people.

Depending on the way you view things you could say that the founding fathers initiated our expanding, by moving and capturing/buying land westward.
