China is making new regulations to control the content on its News Web sites. The News sites will be prohibited from spreading news and information that goes against state security and/or public interest. 'Net Police' will monitor Internet content and remove sites they believe to be inappropriate. China also is requiring people to register their websites and blogs, and may remove blogs that are not registered.

Beijing, Sept. 25 (Reuters): China set new regulations on Internet news content today, widening a campaign of controls it has imposed on other websites, such as discussion groups.

“The state bans the spreading of any news with content that is against national security and public interest,” Xinhua news agency said in announcing the new rules, which took effect immediately.

The news agency did not detail the rules, but said Internet news sites must “be directed towards serving the people and socialism and insist on correct guidance of public opinion for maintaining national and public interests.”

Established news media needed permission to run a news website, it said. New operators had to register themselves with government information offices.

I guess if we were all living in China you could say good by to ATS. Perhaps the government is worried some people might get 'bad' ideas like protesting against political corruption. Take away freedom of information and you wont have to run over students with tanks.

One of the best strategies for controlling people is to take away communication and information.

I am so happy to have the right to free speech.

Not shocking at all, Yahoo, Google, and Microsoft all play ball with this censorship. Yahoo itself contributed to the arrest of a activist. Such is the price when you make deals with the devil I suppose.

Too bad they don't apply the same zeal to cracking down on piracy of western software/media.

I believe the US is not that far behind if left unchecked. Would be prudent for US netizens to pay close attention to the proposed expansions of CALEA: COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANCE FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT ACT and other latent litigation.

What's the difference between what China is doing and what the E.U/U.S.A. plan to do with terror websites?

I don't think the plan to shut down terror websites will ever come to be. There are too many problems in trying to do that and removing the sites wont stop terrorism anyways. Personally I think if they are removing terrorism sites then they should also be removing hate sites like the frontstormer's. But then I guess where does it end? Sites about bomb making? Hacker sites? Porn?
A tough issue anyway.

The problem with the Chinese Internet control is that they are not looking to remove 'terrorist' websites. They will be deciding what News stories get posted on what news sites. That is a huge difference from shutting down a terrorism web site.

This is about restricting what News gets to the people, not preventing terrorism.

It ain't just China. It's done here too - just less publicly. Confidentiality is probably protected as negotiations under some corporations law in the USA.

For example, I have seen western sites block access to information about prions and fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) over and over, starting about 1 1/2 - 2 years ago. Many articles I have on file have been disappeared, others have been censored to remove 'sensitive' information - but I still have the original text. My own writing on the topic has been deleted from Indymedia, and also by Yahoo. Google no longer lists my best prion-FMD articles that are here, and elsewhere. Used to, but no more.

GOD! Terrorism is an illusion. Osama Bin Laden is a figurehead. States do sponsor terrorism as part of their problem-reaction-solution ideology. So basically the United States government was responsible for 9/11.
