I have just though of an idea

Okay I was just thinking of having an artillery round like this cluster mortar munition that could shoot out of the advanced gun system on the DDX. Wound't that be sweet?

first thought would be :

" could it survive launch acceleration etc "

but i guess so - as they do have artillery scattered mine rounds for 155mm systems

which leads to the obvious question - why isnt it in service / development ?

You mean like the whole paladin was supposed to do , if I remember right.
The DDX uses a small rail gun doesnt it?

Um well I'm sure it will be in development soon, the gun system is pretty new. And right know their experimenting with it, so yeah, I'm sure there come up with something like that soon.

There are two 150 MM ones.

Actually rail guns have been around for quite a while, strange no ones used them or used gauss rifles before in miltiary pruposes.

Infact I just had a whacko idea..and posted it in this other thread..
Maybe it is relevant to what you are trying to achieve here..
I shall quote myself:

Hows abt deploying a 10 by 10 foot metal net at the incoming missile??
Let the four corners of the net be hooked to rockets and let the net with rockets be fired at the incoming missile..
Pretty crude I know.. But I visualised it and it looked okay..

ESp. If the net approches the missile at an angle and not head on..
Then it'll have a better chance of yanking the missile off-course..
Also the sheer size of the net will guarantee contact with the incoming projectile..
Mind you the net will have to be made of silk steel alloys or soemthing like that.. strong and flexible..

Btw.. Got the idea from the AVP movie..Those predator nets..

Initially I thought you meant it for defensive measures..

smart idea, BUT 1 problem.
1) You would need to have 4 missiles bigger than the incomeing missile.
