NEWS: David Lange Dies At 63 - Ex New Zealand Prime Minister, page 1

David Lange, the former prime minister of New Zealand who was instrumental in bringing about his country's nuclear free policies, has died of renal complications in a Wellington hospital aged 63. Mr Lange outraged the United States with the policy and clashed with France after their agents were responsible for the bombing of Greenpeaces "Rainbow Warrior". He was diagnosed in 2002 with a rare incurable plasma disorder which damages organs and builds up protein from bone marrow.

The move enraged the United States and led to the country's suspension from the regional security alliance with the United States and Australia, ANZUS.

Mr Lange also clashed with France after French agents bombed the Rainbow Warrior, flagship of the environmental group Greenpeace, in Auckland harbour in 1985 as it prepared to sail to the French South Pacific nuclear testing area of Mururoa.

Mr Lange described the bombing as "a sordid act of state-backed terrorism".
