Chinese scientists have begun drilling a 10,000-meter (32,808 feet) hole into the Earth's crust, as the world's second largest economy explores new frontiers above and below the planet's surface.
The narrow shaft into the ground will penetrate more than 10 continental strata, or layers of rock, according to the report, and reach the cretaceous system in the Earth's crust, which features rock dating back some 145 million years.

well...science is good. I hope they find something worthwhile.

otoh I've seen this in movies and it usually doesn't end well.

other than pure curiosity, I really don't see how this would be worthwhile? do they know something the rest of us don't?

Super spy tunnel to America?

Seriously though, hope they got the geology right and don’t hit a hot spot.

Maybe they are looking for a source of clean water after they realized they have poisoned all of their aquifers due to the ways they achieved their supposed "development."
New research suggests there is a huge amount of water inside the earth-

The deep Earth holds about the same amount of water as our oceans. That’s the conclusion from experiments on rocks typical of those in the mantle transition zone, a global buffer layer 410 to 660 kilometres beneath us that separates the upper from the lower mantle.
“If our estimation is correct, it means there’s a large amount of water in the deep Earth,” says Hongzhan Fei at the University of Bayreuth in Germany. “The total amount of water in the deep Earth is nearly the same as the mass of all the world’s ocean water.”

They only need to drill 400 KM deeper..

Going to be really hot down there. But you never know what they'll find.

On average, the temperature increases by about 25°C for every kilometer of depth.

I dunno how they're gonna keep their bits from melting or compacting under that pressure and heat

This is cool, I'm pretty sure this whole region they are drilling is an ancient sea bed, lots of minerals to be had and also the likelihood of water, maybe they are going to build a new city here that no one will live in.
