I think my Mail Lady is stealing from me

I never would have guessed this, but I think my mail lady is stealing from me.

I’ve had her for years, always waving always nice. Middle aged white lady bob haircut. (Not sure if that matters but just want to give you a visual image)
Last winter I ordered some seeds, I get a notification that my seeds were delivered (I get a notice via email)
I didn’t get them, I checked that day. I called the company and they assured me they sent them.

I figured it was miss-delivered to a neighbor. I waited and nothing. I called the company and told them I never did get them, and inquired as there was a second live plant part of the order that would be sent later. They graciously resent all the seeds and plants. Didn’t think twice about the missing seeds……….until today.

I have been putting some plants out to acclimate because our weather is still cold. A package was delivered…….but…..
A plant amongst many in the same area went missing. Same mail lady. I can’t 100% say it was her because where I have the plants is out of camera view, but the timeframe is so slim. I do have video of her pulling up to that area which is weird bc she always delivers to my front door….weird right?

So where should I go from here? Hidden camera? Camera in mailbox too.

Ps. I’m like rainman when it comes to plants, I have a photographic memory of them. The particular plant may look common but is actually unique and I purposely bought 3, because last year I bought two and was unhappy with that look… I tried to think of other scenarios, animals etc, but highly unlikely as there would be soil and a trail, and a pot!!! The area is protected from wind and other plants would be much easier to blow away.

The area in question can’t be seen from the street either so I don’t think it could be passerbys, also the camera only has the mail truck and UPS, UPS is ruled out due to the time…

Monetary value of items is small…but still chaps my hide…

My mail lady seems fine, but neighbors have been talking about stuff going missing from their yards. I have nothing outside of my house worth taking, but someone has started taking garbage bags out of my trash can at night. I only noticed because it was empty when I went to take it to the curb for last weeks pickup.

I started to put up cameras over the past week. Some are already mounted and the rest will be up by the weekend. I chose the cameras with a spotlight and a microphone/speaker so I can yell "get off my lawn!" as needed.

We used to have very little crime and it was safe to leave the car doors unlocked even until last year.

Flower seeds and a plant from your yard aren't things that I would think that most people would steal, but a flower loving mail lady just might.

Do you have any old unused cell phones lying around? If you do, set them up as security cameras, hidden from view as well as you can. Clear them of all data install necesary software. There is software available.

Best thing is that you can set them up to use house wifi to upload all images to a server so you'd have proof even if the phone is stolen. And set your GPS tracking for the phone while you're at it.

That's what I'd do. But, then, I keep my old cell phones and curretnly have a couple that I'd not mind losing if it meant catching a thief.

Oh, and if you get evidence to prove your suspicion after that, I'd go as public as possible. Scortched earth all the way. Maybe all your local news investigative team to get involved. Seriously. That's a position of pulblic trust and if she's doing it, she needs to be shamed and prosecuted.

Probably delivered to an entirely different zipcode.

I have experienced many a mis-delivery.

How would you catch her on camera though? She's probably not taking it to your door and then taking it back, or putting it in the mailbox and then removing it. If it's theft, then it never leaves the truck, probably gets put in a side box that's emptied at the end of the shift.

What you can do is contact the postmaster of your local post office that delivers to you and have them check that those were delivered to them in the first place. Then you can bring up potential theft, but you should have hard evidence before you accuse anyone of something like that.

You are very likely wrong.
The chances of this planning out in your favor are nearly zero.

If you want to bypass the whole thing, pony up and get a PO box.
Anything else you do is going to be a waste of time and money.

(Post completely deleted)

As others suggested get a PO box; anything else is either a waste or flirting with disaster.

Was this plant something rare or expensive? What about the seeds?
I worked for the USPS and during my time there when there was a theft problem, it pretty much always was a newer, younger carrier.
The younger ones never seemed to care about jeopardizing their jobs to steal stuff, older long term carriers, while it’s not unheard of for them to steal, usually wouldn’t do it as it might jeopardize their pensions etc.
I would ask around at your neighbors to see if they have had any problems with her.

It’s also not unheard of for Postal Inspectors and/or supervisors to attempt to set carriers up using different methods to test them.
I remember in my first 6 months on the job, I opened a mailbox and inside was the biggest bag of pot I’ve ever seen, it was so big, I almost couldn’t fit the mail in the box.
I told another senior carrier that I was friends with and he says they were testing you to see if you would take it.

I don't know... Postal carriers used to be highly sensitized to mail-related crime. Lose your job, your livelihood, over some random mail like that? That's a strangely reckless.

Sometimes kids get crazy and do stupid things, or I've heard in some places where there an influx of homeless vagrancy, mail goes missing... but I wonder if things could be so bad for a postal worker that they might just take things despite all the 'federal law" warnings they get bombarded with all the time.

If it gets too weird you call always contact the regions postal inspector service... they are like the Postal services "internal affairs" people... if they hear a bunch of these accounts they might be able to find out what is happening...

Just a thought.

I have 9 cameras around my small home. It has solved so much bs that was going on, on many levels. I have some hard wired cameras but, I apologize if naming a brand is bad but, Wyze v3 cameras are wonderful. easy, versatile, great visual day & night, audio. really great product.

Can't recommend the effectiveness of cameras enough in this day and age. My cameras went up because of long standing problems, not because of a general paranoia and newsiness/control. I can live gently and safely in Crazyville, USA.

They are attached to outside windowsills or wherever with Command strips. Some have been there for over 6 months without issue.

I would never do anything without absolute proof.
A camera in my box would have easily shown no package was “delivered inside mailbox”.

Ask her if she likes your plants and ask if she has any which might fit the SPACE you can point at because one plant has gone missing. Also ask her if she has seen anyone around your home because she is around there regularly and may have noticed someone or something. Mention you have cameras but be vague.

Watch her eyes and pay attention to her energy and manner.

Honesty can often shock the truth from people but you may be able to READ that she is innocent.....or not.

We know you are smart here at ATS, and I don't think a camera or your own nefareous activities are neccessary perhaps.

Truth and negative psychology are friends a lot of the time.

Perhaps this is how you actually gain a new friend in a roundabout way and reinforce some respect, and maybe a plant or two in the process.

Good luck, and say "hi" to your plants for me.

Cameras everywhere, 24hr surveillance.

Caught a neighbor kid on my camera rig stealing Amazon pkg. Confronted him, showed him the video and ask him what should I do with it. I now have a full time gardener.

On the plus side I now know two blind spots that I need to take care of!

She must really like plants. We got an app called informed delivery from the postal service. It does not show things delivered from within our area, but anything that goes through the main postal hub is on there. It is free and it is kind of nice. We live in Upper Michigan and it is nice to know if I have to go plow by the mailbox if we have something important in the mail. The mail carrier has to mark if the mail was delivered and you can click on it to show you did not receive it too. With us, sometimes stuff goes to our neighbors house and sometimes they get our mail. I live on a country road with the mailboxes at the end of the drive. If we are getting a package that does not fit into our mailbox and our driveway is not plowed, they will leave it on the mailbox and it could get stolen down there, so I need to keep things open if we have something coming or the package may wind up in the woods too if the snowplow goes by and the snow knocks it off the mailbox...it isn't just thieves that can cause lost packages here.
