White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has clarified President Joe Biden's re-election plans after a comment she made sparked confusion.
Hours after Mr Biden formally launched his campaign for a second four-year term in office she refused to say if he planned to complete the entire term.
"That's something for him to decide," she said at a briefing. Mr Biden, 80, is the oldest president in US history.
She later clarified that he would serve another full term in office if he wins.
The spokeswoman's embarrassing about-face came only hours after Mr Biden officially announced he was running again in a pre-recorded video.
"Does the president plan to serve all eight years?" a reporter for Politico asked at a White House briefing on Tuesday.
"That's something for him to decide," she began.
"I'm not just not going to get ahead of it. And there's a 2024 campaign. Anything related to that, I would refer you to that."
Ms Jean-Pierre's gaffe comes amid new polling that suggests a majority of Americans think President Biden should not run for re-election because of his age.
Mr Biden, 80, who is already the oldest serving US president, would be 86 at the end of his second term.

Trump is good at leaning into the fact people dislike him.
There has been unfair moves on him like the DOJ for campaign finance. Every presidential candidate is guilty of a host of crimes from finance to spending.
But I don’t feel sorry for him that ‘the system’ is at least going to be critical of him or push back through campaigning. That’s not just TPTB, but voters, journalists MSM and independent, or officials.
He stirred any pot he walked past. His greatest strength as a public figure is not just New Yorker banter, but also playing a victim along the way.
So yea, the DOJ is out of line. But he better be able to sell his platform even if it’s against adversity.
I voted for him in 2016. Easiest gamble of my life since Hill Dog was the other option, and known quantity. But now I know Trump too. His track record as president is sub par for someone who leans libertarian.
If he can’t debate his way with a loaded deck to candidacy, he’s a bitch, just like Biden.
I started with the legal aspect being completely out of line.

What I said is that it’s fair people criticize him.
If you want to say he is immune from scrutiny, that’s no different than the left deciding who is off limits from debate.

Why do so many people dislike Him? Other than he speaks his Mind. Hell best POTUS in my 70 years.
You’re twisting my words and being hyperbolic.
You know that’s not what I’m trying to say, you’re just being dramatic
It’s a conversation dude, chill out.
I never said Trump should be prosecuted.
Every presidential candidate is guilty of a host of crimes from finance to spending.
I was talking about him being at a debate or dealing with the public stage of campaigning.

The plan is for EV's to be plugged in to the system and be drawn on for power when needed.

Well this is the first I am hearing of this.
I believe 2012 was the last time they called off debates while big O was running for his 2nd term.
Well either Trump again doesn't want to debate.
Go figure it's because people say mean things about him and he has thin skin.
